Position Title

  • Accessibility Coordinator
    Position Summary
  • The division of Student Supports is currently inviting applicants for a permanent fulltime Accessibility Coordinator to join their team
  • The Accessibility Coordinator works with current and prospective students and promotes an accessible, equitable and supportive learning environment for students with disabilities in accordance with Red Deer Polytechnic policy and with the Alberta Human Rights Act. In addition, the individual(s) in this position will provide general learning support to all Red Deer Polytechnic students.
    Position Responsibilities

Provision of case management and learning strategies instruction

  • Facilitate the creation and execution of efficient and effective processes within the department that reflect best service practices.
  • Recommend resources, technology and reference materials.
  • Collaborate with instructors and staff regarding accommodations for individual students.
  • Liaise with other departments, such as Campus Management, Student Connect Centre, Health & Wellbeing Services, Counselling, Library, CTL, and Testing Services as required to ensure campus accessibility and smooth integration of services.
  • Help students develop selfadvocacy skills and manage their disabilities or health conditions in an academic setting.
  • Authorize, implement and monitor academic accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Review funding eligibility, make formal recommendations and operate within Student Aid guidelines and processes in collaboration with funded students.
  • Research, evaluate, adapt and create assessment tools and strategies for the purposes of developing best practices for optimizing learning for students.

Assessment of student needs

  • Meet with prospective and registered students to determine their disabilityrelated needs and to provide relevant information related to their disability and their role as a student.
  • Consult with students, high school counsellors, parents, medical professionals, and service providers to determine student needs.
  • Consult with instructors and staff to determine appropriate accommodations in academic courses and activities to ensure they meet the student needs yet do not violate the integrity of the course/program outcomes, policy guidelines and professional ethics.
  • Identify learning difficulties and assess the learning needs of students and develop action plans and recommendations to enhance success.
  • Keep current with disabilityrelated funding sources and processes and advise students on funding options.
  • Understand and use a variety of assistive technologies to support learners with different learning needs.
  • Work with Library staff members in providing this service to others.

Provision of expertise to peers and the polytechnic community

  • Provide guidance, training, and leadership to staff who provide direct service to students.
  • Encourage activities to raise awareness, in the polytechnic community, of the impact of disabilities in a learning environment, Alberta Human Rights Duty to accommodate legislation, principles of Universal Design and ways to create an inclusive learning community.
  • Consult with faculty, staff and administrators regarding universal design, academic accommodations and compliance with legal responsibilities and how they relate to instruction and curriculum development.
  • Act as a resource in the decisionmaking process of academic or disciplinary decisions that affect students with disabilities.

Coordination of Accessibility Services

  • Provide daytoday direction when term certain employees such as Sign Language Interpreters and Braille Transcribers are on staff.
  • Establish processes and procedures for tracking the utilization of fundable services.
  • Review invoices and resolve billing, recording and tracking discrepancies to ensure accuracy of billing information and records.

Participation in professional growth and the acquisition of new skills

  • Actively participates in training and professional development activities as they become available as well as offers such activities in their areas of expertise.
  • Seeks learning opportunities from other staff in the Division of Student Success to increase knowledge of divisional services and can provide initial support and triage to students, faculty and staff.
  • Actively acquires knowledge and regularly reviews policy and procedure in order to meet user needs immediately without misleading or misdirecting students to services.
  • Seeks roles on relevant internal and external committees.

Required Qualifications

  • Four (4) year undergraduate degree, or equivalent, in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Health Science, Rehabilitation or related field
  • Two (2) to three (3) years of related experience
  • Knowledge of Alberta and Canadian Human Rights legislation affecting
