About Us:

As one of Canada's most research-intensive universities, the impact of our work is the result of world-class researchers working collaboratively with highly skilled professional staff.

Western is seeking a Biological Safety Officer who can work alongside global-leading researchers in infectious disease - ensuring our buildings, labs and our people are not only meeting but exceeding health and safety standards and mitigating any environmental risks.

This important research is conducted across exceptional facilities like Western's ImPaKT lab that recently received a $16-million investment from the federal government to expand pandemic research and manufacture pharmaceutical-grade drugs as part of a new Canada research hub.

Responsibilities:

The Biological Safety Officer is a position specifically referenced in governing statute as responsible for ensuring compliance with permits, licenses, regulatory requirements, safety standards, and for developing and promoting policies and procedures related to work using pathogens, toxins and other biohazards across campus.

The role provides consultations, workplace assessments, training and technical guidance on safe methods for manipulating, studying, producing, and containing infectious agents and biological hazards.

The Officer liaises with regulatory bodies and inspectors, the Biological Safety and Biohazards committees, maintains records and monitors follow up actions, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.

The role encourages and promotes safe work practices that protect humans, animals and the environment from the potential danger of infection.

The Officer will join a team of like-minded health, safety and well-being professionals who develop proactive human resource strategies and deliver exemplary services.

And they do this within a department that values collaboration, and teamwork and invests in continuous learning and professional development.

Qualifications:

Western has ambitious goals to advance the impact of our research across all disciplines.

To do this, we need outstanding professionals to join our team - bringing the expertise and the energy that will help propel Western forward.
