The DSU represents the collective voice of over 18,000 students in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The DSU advocates for student rights, builds community on campus through events, supports over 300 societies, and provides focused services to foster a supportive and positive student experience.


Position Summary:


The Sponsorship and Advertising Coordinator is responsible for working collaboratively and effectively with relevant staff and elected student representatives to acquire paid sponsorship and advertising opportunities.

This role entails supporting key governance goals such as the DSU's Orientation programming and various student-run events and programs. This position is open to Dalhousie University students only.


The incumbent will also assume responsibility for working with the Communications Coordinator in managing stakeholder relationships between the DSU and its sponsors and advertisers.


Key Accountabilities:


  • Assume responsibility for the procurement and coordination of sponsorship for activities and events in conjunction with the Communications Coordinator, and other staff and student representatives;
  • Coordinate the sale of advertising in DSU digital and printed publications and events in conjunction with the Communications Coordinator;
  • Prepare specialized reports, correspondence, recommendations, evaluations and advice on sponsorship and advertising initiatives for DSU management
  • Multistakeholder process tracking.
  • Attend regular meetings with the Communications Coordinator

Advice and Resource Development:

  • Provide sponsorship advice and support to staff and student representatives in the preevent consultation and planning, implementation and evaluation of departmental events;
  • Develop and maintain best practice guidelines for advertising and sponsorship to support events within the DSU; and
  • Maintain a dedicated advertising calendar.

Teamwork and Collaboration:

  • Foster effective working relationships with key internal stakeholders, external advertisers and sponsors, and staff across the organization;
  • Work collaboratively with the Executive Team to carry out key events put on by the DSU such as O-Week, Snow Week, and the International Student Gala;
  • Work collaboratively with students and staff to execute coordinated advertising and sponsorship plans that are appropriate and relevant; and
  • Secure appropriate permissions for contractual agreements.

Copy Writing:

  • Develop copy for advertising and other promotional material as required
  • Ensure that all advertising content is up to date and produced with a consistent approach to brand, tone of voice and audience engagement principles.
  • Draft contracts for sponsorship and advertising opportunities

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Must be a Dalhousie Student for the Fall 2023 and Winter 2024 Semester
  • Ideally, experience in Marketing, Advertising or Public Relations
  • Ability to work within crossfunctional teams to successfully procure and coordinate sponsorship for events
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including the ability to interact, influence and negotiate to achieve agreed outcomes
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proven organisational skills, including the ability to set work priorities, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, plan output to meet deadlines, and work effectively within a dynamic and evolving work environment
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
This opportunity runs from May 2023, to April 2024.

This position pays $15.50 per hour, averaging approximately 15 hours a week in the summer and 5 -10 hours a week for the remainder of the year.
