Job Summary:

Hours of Work
42 hours per week based on a 24/7 rotational shift schedule including holidays and weekends. On-call rotation and operation superintendent shifts are a requirement of this position.


Your role

  • Provide leadership and direction to paramedics and enforcing standards as per Ambulance Act, Regional Base Hospital, Guelph-Wellington Paramedic Service Manual of Policies and Procedures and Corporate policies.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable legislative requirements, policies and procedures of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Ambulance Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and collective agreements.
  • Support paramedic staff to ensure the most effective Community Paramedicine coverage in the City of Guelph and County of Wellington, while ensuring timely and thorough patient centered care is provided.
  • Monitor incidents and ensure proper documentation is completed and followup occurs in a timely manner.
  • Liaise with various stakeholders within emergency service agencies, community agencies and hospitals while representing Guelph Wellington Paramedic Service in a professional manner.
  • Ensures staffing requirements are met and coordinated with Scheduling Department.
  • Ensure equipment, supplies and fleet are maintained ongoing and after each visit in a sanitary and working condition.
  • Ensure required stock supply levels are maintained in each vehicle and at each base.
  • Maintain excellent public relations standards with respect to contact with the public, government, and outside organizations. Conduct preplanned and infield training programs for departmental staff and the public as required.
  • Maintain Community Paramedicine service throughout various contingencies.
  • Complete initial investigations both internally and externally as required and provide documentation to the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Monitor performance with respect to local policies and procedures, act in realtime to ensure accuracy and report issues to the Commander of Community Paramedicine.
  • Ministry and legislative reporting including the tracking and reporting of program access, and utilization of emergency department and community health services
  • Respond to customer inquiries directly and/or resolve difficult or highly sensitive complaints either verbally, or in writing, and update the Commander of Community Paramedicine as appropriate.
  • Implement customer service strategies to ensure that services provided meet corporate standards.
  • Maintain certification as a Paramedic as per the Ambulance Act and Regional Base Hospital to respond to emergencies in a first response capacity as needed. Conduct client home visits, provide patient care and where required, safe transport consistent with MOH LTC Patient Care Standards.
  • Identify training and development needs, in association with coaching and mentoring staff.
  • Complete performance appraisals and determine or recommend required followup action up to and including dismissal in accordance with collective agreements, Service policies, and practices, ensuring all reports are prepared, processed, maintained, and reported to the Commander of Community Paramedicine.
  • Provide frontline leadership demonstrated by actions and communications that enhance patient care, the operation, staff engagement, and service reputation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Qualified to work as a paramedic meeting all requirements outlined under the Ambulance Act of Ontario.
  • Current Standard First Aid certification or equivalent and CPR certification to HCP level.
  • Satisfactory Police Record Check (including vulnerable sector screening) must be provided at time of hire.
  • Advanced computer skills including familiarity with the Office 365 suite and ability to learn and use of a variety of technological hardware and software (i.e., remote monitoring, software, CHRIS, ClinicalConnect, Ocean, Hypercare, PreHos etc.)
  • Experience supervising and leading work teams with the ability to coach and mentor staff, preferably in a unionized environment.
