Scope


The Housing Worker is responsible for supporting Refugee Claimants who are benefitting from the NSLT program in finding affordable and suitable accommodation and understanding their rights as tenants.

The worker is expected to work co-operatively with others in the community; demonstrate flexibility in organizing work; show a high degree of initiative, discernment, and resourcefulness; must have excellent communication skills and demonstrate thoughtfulness in decision-making, and assist refugee families in housing and purchasing furniture.


Responsibilities

  • Conducts housing needs assessment and assists clients in making decisions regarding accommodation
  • Conducts housing search within GTA for clients, and secures appropriate and affordable housing for clients within a given timeframe
  • Analyzes the housing rental market and client's needs and makes recommendations that are within their budget
  • Provides comprehensive information on housing choices and assists clients in selecting appropriate housing options
  • Escorts clients to housing appointments and advocates with landlords on their behalf as needed
  • Secures appropriate and affordable housing for clients within a given timeframe
  • Provides support to clients in negotiating and finalizing housing leases
  • Informs clients about their responsibilities as tenants in order to maintain housing
  • Recruits housing providers and maintains a data of housing providers
  • Works with the community and stakeholders to encourage the development of new affordable housing units
  • Conducts housing orientation sessions to ensure that clients understand the rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords
  • Increases accessibility by delivering services at itinerant public and community spaces in collaboration with other service providers
  • Provides information and referrals to external programs and services to meet the needs of each client/family
  • Maintains and expands client base through outreach and community penetration and itinerate functions
  • Effectively tracks activities and provides accurate reporting to Program Coordinator
  • Effectively tracks services in internal databases and provides accurate reporting to Program Coordinator
  • Achieves targets set by Program Coordinator
  • Actively participates in professional development initiatives
  • Performs other program duties assigned
