The opportunity:

The University of Manitoba is looking for a Research Compliance Analyst.

This role will be responsible for supporting the Team in the implementation of the University's research compliance program, including assisting in conducting initial and ongoing risk assessments of funders and research projects, assisting in monitoring reviews, conducting tests of internal controls and transactions for compliance, and preparing reports of deficiencies identified and recommendations for improvement.


The Research Compliance Analyst will also be responsible for conducting ongoing monitoring of research funds to prevent over-expenditure, and for participating in the financial reporting process by ensuring all financial reports are submitted to external agencies in a timely manner and preparing various internal financial and statistical reports.


The qualifications and experience we're looking for:

  • A University degree is required, with a major in accounting or finance preferred.
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum level of Core 2 of the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) professional accounting program.
  • Systems training in computerized financial records environment would be an asset.
  • Two years of experience in an accounting related position is required, where knowledge of accounting theory and practice and a working knowledge of computer systems has been acquired.
  • Experience in assessing risk, conducting tests of internal controls, auditing, reporting on findings and providing recommendations for improvement is required.
  • Experience with budget oversight, conducting financial and statistical analysis, preparing financial and statistical reports is required.
  • Experience communicating financial information to nonfinancial staff and faculty is required.
  • Experience in compliance auditing is preferred.
  • Experience advising on financial best practices, policies and procedures and promoting compliance is preferred.
  • Experience working in a complex, integrated computer and information system environment and a working knowledge of computer produced data is preferred.
  • Experience in materials development for training purposes is desirable.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must be skilled in the use of a personal computer and desktop software Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook and Windows).
  • Good oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills are required.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Must have the ability to understand and interpret complex guidelines and contracts.
  • Must have the ability to process large numbers of data and documents with speed, accuracy, and attention to detail to meet strict deadlines.
  • Strong ability to interpret funding agency policies, guidelines, and contractual requirements and to exercise professional judgement in determining the eligibility of expenses are required.
  • Ability to adapt to an everchanging environment required.
  • Ability to consistently conduct oneself in a professional manner is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service is required.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
