Job Summary:

The Janitor provides complete Janitorial services at the Abbotsford or Chilliwack campus as assigned.

The incumbent is responsible for the care of assigned areas, such as washrooms, classrooms, offices, hallways, and entrance ways, performing complete cleaning services, removing garbage, maintaining the appearance of floor areas and stairwells, and ensuring that classrooms are ready for learning.


The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining the security of buildings, locking and unlocking buildings and classrooms as necessary, moving furniture and equipment as required, and removing litter and snow from the exterior walkways as required.

The Janitor ensures the cleanliness and daily general appearance of the University.


The Janitor:

  • Performs complete washroom services; cleans and disinfects all washroom toilets, urinals, waste receptacles, sinks, counter surfaces, dispensers, partitions, shower stalls and floor surfaces; restocks all dispensers and ensures proper operation.
  • Removes all waste; empties all interior and exterior waste receptacles, replaces liners and washes waste receptacles as required, transports all waste to exterior waste collection containers.
  • Maintains the appearance of floor areas and stairwells by sweeping, removing marks, spot washing and damp mopping; performs floor maintenance procedures by auto scrubbing, burnishing, and restoring, stripping, and waxing floors as per schedule.
  • Maintains the appearance of carpeted areas and entrance mats by vacuuming, removing gum, stains, and spot cleans and shampoos carpet as required.
  • Cleans and dusts furniture, equipment and window blinds, cleans whiteboards, blackboards, notice boards, interior and exterior of entrance door glass, interior windows and sweeps of walkways; removes dust from all horizontal surfaces; rechalks blackboards as required.
  • Provides the movement, relocation, and setup of classroom furniture and equipment as required.
  • Maintains assigned Janitorial equipment including vacuums, buffers/scrubbers, burnishers, autoscrubbers, carpet shampooer, mop bucket and wringers, Janitorial carts, mops and all cleaning products used; operates all Janitorial equipment in a safe manner; keeps assigned Janitorial equipment clean.
  • Cleans and washes walls, light fixtures, lenses, and air grilles/vents as required.
  • Maintains Janitorial carts; ensures carts are fully stocked and ready for use at shift end.
  • Maintains paper and cardboard recycling services by removing paper recycling bags, replacing bags, removing cardboard and transporting to exterior recycling collection containers.
  • Locks/unlocks classrooms and buildings as required; maintains the security of the buildings by ensuring all external doors and windows are secure; arms and disarms building security systems.
  • Utilizes twoway radio as a means of personal safety and communication between the Janitors, supervisor, and security.
  • Uses and ensures the care and safe keeping of an assigned set of campus master keys.
  • Assists in keeping exterior walkways free of litter, snow, and ice.
  • Reports building deficiencies, damages, vandalism, and safety hazards to the Supervisor, Janitorial Services.
  • Assists with building evacuation procedures for public safety in the event of an emergency, i.e. fire alarm, power outage.
  • Communicates in a respectful and professional manner with all members of the team, department, University community and external partners.
  • Collaborates effectively as a team member, including sharing information, cross training, and interpersonal cooperation.
  • Demonstrates respect for all members of the UFV community and proactively works to create an environment of inclusivity and accessibility.
  • Actively engages in learning and activities related to actioning indigenization and understanding the impact of colonialism and the purpose of reconciliation.
  • Participates in committees and project teams as required.
  • Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of the position.

Qualifications:


  • Building Service Worker Certificate is required.
  • One (1) year of related experience.
  • WHMIS certification is required.
  • Knowledge of commercial equipment and procedures used for stripping and waxing floors required.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Duties require a moderate degree of physical exertion including bending down, kneeling, crouching for extended periods of time, pulling, pushing, manually carrying, lifting & transporting heavy objects.
  • Required to work in environments exposed to strong fumes, noise, dust, heights, and equipment with moving parts that requires employee to be cognizant of all safety protocols & procedures inherent in their field, making use of professional protection equipment such as ear plugs, safety glasses, and gloves.
