Our Community Counsellor

  • Works within a multidisciplinary team to provide counselling and support services to women and genderdiverse people who are experiencing mental health and substance use challenges.
  • Provides Relapse Prevention programming and oneonone counselling to women and genderdiverse people in the community.
  • Provides Relapse Prevention programming to women and genderdiverse people at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre and makes appropriate referrals for individuals motivated to attend a treatment program upon release.

Core Responsibilities

Intake and Assessment

  • Complete client intakes and assess client needs and determine service goals.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments with each client to determine appropriate interventions.
  • Complete addictions screening and assessment tools with clients as part of their treatment program goals.

Program Facilitation

  • Provide Relapse Prevention programming to women and genderdiverse people via group or individual sessions.
  • Provide Relapse Prevention programming to women and genderdiverse people at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre via group or individual sessions.
  • Ensure material presented is empowering and individual needs are considered in the presentation of skills development.
  • Maintain accurate records and case notes of client's attendance, participation, and progress.
  • Provide ongoing assistance, feedback, and support to participants consistent with their goals and determinants of success.
  • Provide resource referrals, crisis intervention, conflict resolution to group participants.
  • Provide completion reports to referring professionals (Probation and Parole Officers, Courts, Defense Counsel)

Ongoing supports/responsibilities

  • Provide therapeutic clinical counselling services to clients in designated programs.
  • Provide crisis intervention strategies using a humancentered, traumainformed approach.
  • Liaise with community partners and other agencies in a manner that promotes the agency's reputation and facilitates quality care for shared clients.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with key supports and resources in the mental health and addiction service sectors.
  • Liaise with treatment centers/professionals and provide appropriate referrals.
  • Initiate and participate in individual professional development; maintain current knowledge and skills in relation to addiction, mental health, and evidencebased therapeutic approaches.
  • Assist in the evaluation of participants success and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Advocate for clients and liaise with communitybased agencies as needed.
  • Maintain accurate case notes and correspondence.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and professional development sessions as required.

Other responsibilities


The Community Counsellor - Mental Health and Addictions Services attends monthly staff meetings and case management meetings as required and undertakes other duties as may be assigned by the Manager, Community Programs and Services to improve or enhance the delivery of service.

The position requires ongoing input and maintaining of statistical information for monthly and quarterly reporting purposes.

Qualifications

Required education and experience.

  • College Registration: QRP, RP, MSW or Eligible to be registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario or the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (and authorized to perform
