Under the supervision of the Cemeteries Coordinator, the Gardener 1 performs skilled work in the care and maintenance of annuals perennials, shrubs and landscape areas.

Participates in and/or assists in the planning and execution of all planting in the garden of remembrance. Assists with the preparation of planting plans and maintain garden inventory records and files. Provides guidance and mentoring to junior employees. The Gardener 1 operates a variety of hand and power tools, small equipment and vehicles required for gardening duties.


As the _Gardener 1 in Cemeteries,_
_ _you will**:

  • Assist in the design, plant selection and layout of flower beds, shrub beds, and planters.
  • Prepare garden beds for planting and plant annual and perennial flowers and shrubs.
  • Diagnose insect and disease pest problems and may carry out appropriate corrective measures.
  • Operate irrigation systems and waters plants.
  • Perform weeding, cultivating, staking and pruning, etc. of planting beds including shrubs and trees.
  • Maintain turf and landscaped areas.
  • Follow established safe work practices, operating policies and procedures and ensures compliance.
  • Provide information and feedback on performance, concerns, etc. regarding junior employees to supervisor.
  • Successfully complete additional courses at the request of the Department or as per legislation.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the classification as required.

Your education and qualifications include:


  • Successful completion of Grade 12 or GED. An equivalent combination of training, experience and education will be considered.
  • Postsecondary certificate/diploma in horticulture would be an asset.
  • Experience in gardening activities specific to care and maintenance of annuals, perennials, bedding plants and shrubs for a minimum of two gardening season or equivalent; or related horticultural training, courses, education; or a combination of experience and knowledge obtained through relevant training, courses, etc.
  • Experience operating small equipment, hand and power tools and vehicles required in carrying out the duties of the position (push mowers, weed trimmers, allterrain vehicles etc.).
  • Ability to identify different species and varieties of annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow workers and the general public.
  • Ability to organize, and mentor junior staff.
  • Ability to successfully complete additional courses at the request of the Department or as per legislation.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, including crouching, working in extreme weather, walking on uneven terrain.

Conditions of employment:


  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's License. The successful applicant will be required to provide a driver's notice in force document upon request.
  • Must be available to report to various cemetery locations, at any given day, dependent on operational requirements.
  • Must be able to work outdoors, in a warm humid environment, work at heights and confined spaces.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties and responsibilities of the position including, sitting, standing, walking, climbing ladders and lifting weights in excess of up to 50 lbs.
