Responsibilities:


The Library Assistant (Metadata Specialist) in Discovery, Description, and Metadata facilitates access to library resources for students, faculty, staff and other users through the creation, enhancement, and maintenance of bibliographic information in Omni (Western Libraries' Library Services Platform, a collaborative Consortia partnership of shared print and electronic/digital resource management with 17 universities in Ontario.

The role supports the management of electronic resources by reviewing records to ensure consistency in bibliographic records. The Library Assistant also provides support to the Metadata Management Librarians in their roles in Discovery, Description, & Metadata. The role participates on various committees and working groups to support administrative, operational, or other library activities as required.


Qualifications:

  • 3 year university bachelor's degree
  • Experience:
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Demonstrated general knowledge of metadata schema used in institutional repositories and for digitized material
  • Detailoriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to describe technical matters in nontechnical terms
  • Proven resourcefulness, initiative, innovation to interpret policies and procedures and identify appropriate solutions
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member, working collaboratively and collegially with colleagues to achieve department goals
  • Selfmotivated multitasker with strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities
  • Verbal and written communication skills to clearly express ideas in an objective manner, adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience, with an excellent command of the English language; Reading knowledge of additional languages would be an asset
  • Ability to maintain a positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation
