KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


The duties provided by this position include leading and driving ethics initiatives and services, and providing direct and indirect support to clinical and organizational practice through identifying ethical needs of the organization, develops specific goals, and contributing to a comprehensive ethics program.

The Ethicist will accomplish this through clinical consultation, organizational consultation, education and program development, research support, and accountability for ethics program outcomes and achievements.


Clinical and Organizational Ethics:


  • Provides ethics consultation services to staff, physicians, patients and their families
  • Participates in and contributes ethics expertise to relevant organizational committees, working groups, task forces, and projects
  • Supports and facilitates development and implementation of policies, procedures and guidelines that align with organizational values and are grounded in current ethical standards and approaches
  • Supports Ontario Shore's leadership role in mental health by developing, evaluating and sustaining ethics services contracts with our external partners in the Regional Ethics Hub
  • Responsible for recognizing and reporting patient, staff, and environment safety issues, and identifying and implementing preventative and corrective actions, within the scope of this role.

Ethics Education and Program Development:


  • Designs and provides ethics education and resources to clinical staff, managers, physicians, the Board of Directors, patients and families, and the public
  • Analyzes and suggest improvements in consultation methods and approaches through Ethics Program quality assurance and evaluation initiatives.

Research Portfolio and Research Mandate:


  • Supports the organization's research mandate as a standing member of the hospital's Joint Research Ethics Board (JREB) and by providing ethics support for research related policy/procedure development, etc.
  • Leads and participates in Ethicsrelevant research projects to ensure Ontario Shores is a leader in mental health ethics scholarship.

QUALIFICATIONS:


Requirements:

Master's or terminal Degree in bioethics or equivalent field required:

  • Completion of a formal practice-based training program (e.g., fellowship) in clinical and organizational ethics preferred
  • Minimum 3 years' experience developing and providing comprehensive ethics services in a healthcare setting required
  • Previous professional experience in a mental health setting preferred
  • Ethical leadership experience in health organizations, including program management, change management, and related skills, preferred
  • Demonstrated skills in ethics consultation, ethics education, and policy development and review, required
  • Effective skills in mediation and conflict resolution
  • Experience serving on a Research Ethics Board preferred
  • Demonstrated track record of bioethics research and scholarship
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, facilitation/mediation, team building, and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to work in a collaborative manner with interdisciplinary teams
  • Familiarity with ethical issues related to mental health and philosophy of care in mental health settings
  • Willingness to travel to other sites and settings as the need arises (expenses are reimbursed)
  • Travel required within the Central East LHIN

Contract:
May 2024 to September 2025,Please note this is a Temporary Part time Position with 4 days per week.
