Summary


The Construction Skilled Labourer will be required to perform tasks involving physical labor at commercial and industrial construction projects, and will be required to operate a variety of hand and power tools.

Responsibilities will include the cleaning and preparation of work-sites, supporting carpenters and installers, cleaning up rubble and debris and removal of waste materials.

Must be capable of operating a variety of tools and equipment, which may include:
power saws, air nailers, mechanical hoists, laser beams, Forklift and Manlifts. Additional duties will be assigned as necessary.

Job Duties

  • Clean and perform preparation of worksite.
  • Operate power tools and air nailers.
  • Move materials and assist with layouts as requested
  • Mix, pour, and spread concrete.
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials.
  • Smooth and finish freshly poured cement or concrete, using floats, trowels, screeds, or powered cement finishing tools.
  • Spray materials such as water, sand, steam, vinyl, paint, or stucco through hoses to clean, coat, or seal surfaces.
  • Lubricate, clean, maintain and repair machinery, equipment, and tools.
  • Operate, read, and maintain air monitoring and other sampling devices when working in confined spaces and/or hazardous environments.
  • Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards.
  • Grind, scrape, sand, or polish surfaces using abrasive tools or machines.
  • Support installing sewer, water, and storm drain pipes, using pipelaying machinery and laser guidance equipment.
  • Load, unload, and identify building materials, machinery, and tools, and distribute them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans and specifications.
  • Measure, mark, and record openings and distances to lay out areas where construction work will be performed.
  • Provide assistance to craft workers, such as carpenters, plumbers, and electricians.
  • Perform demolition work and salvage useful materials.
  • Read and interpret plans, instructions, blueprints, structural drawings, rough sketches, and specifications to determine work activities.
  • Identify, pack, and transport hazardous materials.
  • Bolt, nail and align forms or modules.
  • Support craning of prefab walls or modules

Requirements:


  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Post-Secondary diploma in a related field preferred
  • 2 years of experience as a Construction Skilled Laborer
  • Knowledge of workplace safety and safe lifting and handling procedures
  • Knowledge of First Aid and CPR preferred
  • Ability to effectively train / educate apprentices
  • Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner
  • Effective verbal and listening communications skills
  • Time management skills
  • Ability to read building specifications, blueprints and asbuilds
  • Ability to draw appropriate sketches to communicate details to students and others.
  • Mathematical skills and analytical skills necessary for construction
  • Valid Driver's license
  • Proactive in ensuring job knowledge is current.

  • Knowledge of appropriate materials, methods, and the tools required in various construction processes
  • Strong working mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.

  • Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
  • Must recognize different soil types.

Work Conditions

  • Job requires ability to work with tools, lumber and materials.
  • Ability to lift and manipulate objects of up to 80 lbs for 50 feet is required.
  • Use of Personal Protection Equipment will be required (e.g. hardhat, safety boots, etc.)
  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue and to effectively jump, sprint or throw an object.
  • Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multilimb coordination.
  • Noise level is generally loud.
  • Must be able to quickly move arms and legs.
  • Excellent stamina is required.
  • Hazards associated with the construction industry.

$17.50-$26.50 per hour
