As a Peace Officer Sergeant, you will oversee an operational unit within the Peace Officer Section.

Using your strong leadership skills you will be responsible for building, coaching and mentoring a high performing team of Peace Officers who provide investigative and enforcement services to the general public, industry, and City Departments, which all contributes to a safer Edmonton.

Your success will be measured by your ability to achieve timely results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Oversee operational deployment by leading, coaching, mentoring and supervising field staff. This includes hiring, training, conducting regular performance appraisals and assisting with disciplinary action when required
  • Schedule staff covering 1820 hours a day and 365 days a year
  • Provide input on performance measures, policy development, enforcement measures, and staffing levels to meet operational demands
  • Monitor communications and maintain awareness through dispatch of street level deployments to ensure appropriate and timely response levels meet established guidelines
  • Address customer concerns for investigation and resolution, or redirect for appropriate followup
  • Ensure orientations and training records are up to date, consistent, and stored appropriately
  • Be a resource to staff regarding safety and enforcement direction/discretion
  • Respond to general complaints and conduct patrols when required in accordance with enforcement of Municipal bylaws, Provincial Acts and Federal Legislation (limited)
  • Assist with coordinating education programs; identify gaps and work to overcome them
  • Identify and train staff to assist with education programs for schools
  • Assist with policy and procedure development and work to ensure that best practices for safety and security are followed
  • Lead operational planning while working in conjunction with other team leaders
  • Provide field presence to supplement staffing when necessary
  • Initiate and create projects as required with the assistance of Branch leadership
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Completion of a recognized Diploma related to Conservation Enforcement, Law Enforcement, Security or Criminology or equivalent; additional supervisory course work is required
  • Minimum 5 years of customer service experience
  • Minimum 3 years of diverse law enforcement experience
  • Minimum 1 year of supervisory experience in a law enforcement role
  • Must possess the Provincial Community Peace Officer I designation or equivalent with completion of the Community Peace Officer Induction Program
  • CPOIP
  • Must be able to obtain or have successfully completed the Physical Abilities Readiness Evaluation (P.A.R.E.) within 4 minutes and 45 seconds (4:45)
  • Demonstrated understanding and effectiveness building and supervising high performing teams
  • Professional knowledge of the Peace Officer Program, applicable legislation, provincial requirements and standards
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a highly ambiguous, dynamic, and demanding daytoday environment
  • Strong supervisory, leadership, mentorship, and change & project management skills required
  • Must be able to work independently on confidential, sensitive, and complex issues
  • Experience working or volunteering in your community or with racialized people and other equity seeking groups would be considered an asset
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of another language is an asset
  • Demonstrated understanding of racism and discrimination as it pertains to law enforcement, and how bias can influence behaviour and decisions
  • Knowledge of or training in harm reduction, antiracism, Indigenous awareness and GBA+ would be considered an asset
  • Skilled in exercising good tact and sound judgement when dealing with difficult situations/persons, and recognize and react appropriately to volatile situations
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and Occupational Health and Safety is required
  • Knowledge of operational and tactical planning, communication, and good computer literacy
  • Ability to establish and maintain internal and external stakeholder relationships
  • Excellent communication, organization, prioritization, and time management skills are required
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and serviceminded style
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Possession of valid Standard First Aid and Basic CPR certificates
