The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) is a large, diverse, and comprehensive unit, comprised of six Schools (Nursing, Kinesiology, Health Studies, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Communication Sciences and Disorders), a large Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and four Research Centres.

The faculty has more than 3,200 undergraduate students and more than 800 graduate students (200 PhD students).

The Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing will educate nurses who are reflective practitioners and provide recognized leadership in nursing theory, research, practice, inter-professional health teaching and learning, and policy advancements.

The Research Assistant Innovative Assessments (Graduate Research Assistant) will support the review of educational scholarship literature related to transformative learning, decolonial pedagogy, critical pedagogy, and collaborative teaching with Indigenous communities.

The role will support developing ethics related to self-study in education, using methods like journaling.

This role supports developing innovative assessments in nursing education. The Graduate Research Assistant will have a strong background in education related to equity, diversity, and inclusivity, including, equity-oriented health care, cultural safety, trauma
- and violence-informed approaches, harm reduction, social justice, decolonization, global solidarity, anti-racism, and transformative learning.


The Graduate Research Assistant will support the review of student reflections related to innovative assessment, implementing qualitative methods, including coding and thematic analysis of transcripts.

This role may involve the facilitation of student focus groups and participation in research team meetings with Indigenous Epistemological consultants and Elders.


Education:


  • Current graduate student at Western in Nursing, Education, or Social Science discipline (psychology, sociology, anthropology, public health, health studies, women and gender studies, equity studies, or related discipline).

Experience:


  • 3 years experience conducting research related to educational research, social determinants of health, health, health equity, or closely related areas of study; preferably in an academic setting
  • 3 years' experience authoring reports, proposals, and academic papers
  • Previous experience in all stages of qualitative research

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


Required skills:

  • Familiarity with educational technologies, strategies, and tools
  • Demonstrated commitment to, passion for, and knowledge of EDID and educational scholarship
  • Working knowledge of key EDIDrelated legislation, concepts, issues, and trends, and educational scholarship
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrated strong scholarly writing
  • Selfdriven, independent thinker who is highly motivated and possesses an intrinsic passion for quality
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, manage multiple and diverse tasks, and maintain an organized and effective personal work environment
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve goals
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research principles, theory, and methods (qualitative approaches)
  • Experience preparing ethics submissions
  • Superior research skills and reportgeneration skills
  • Superior writing skills and knowledge of the publication process with demonstrated expertise in leading and contributing to peerreviewed publications
  • Advanced level skill in qualitative data analysis
  • Solid judgment and ethical conduct including the ability to maintain confidentiality, tact, and discretion
