Overview:


The Building Serviceperson I Painter is assigned to participate in all facets of building maintenance including corrective, demand, preventive maintenance, reconstruction and restoration work primarily related to building and equipment finishes, coatings and coverings.

Will perform other duties as assigned to the limits of skills and code requirements.


This position brings general trade knowledge, provides job instruction and work direction to others as required and contributes towards providing a safe, accessible, invitingly clean, comfortable and well-maintained campus environment.


Responsibilities:


Maintenance, Repair, and New Installations

Performs assigned work including, but not limited to:

  • Repairs, cleans, patches, and prepares various surfaces for painting, including minor drywall / wallboard repair
  • Mixes and tints paints, matching colours as required to maintain consistency of finished appearance
  • Maintains exterior building features and decorative elements and outdoor equipment such as benches, railings, guard posts, light standards
  • Paints offices (touching up walls, doors, trim and furniture, etc.)
  • Paints various service areas (mechanical equipment, piping, etc.)
  • Assists with paint related design aspects of jobs assigned
  • Performs work in an organized manner to minimize client impact
  • Documents all maintenance and inspection activities as directed by the Supervisor

Operations

  • Provides feedback on facility condition and potential maintenance timelines and options
  • Provides assistance to other trades, including internal and external contractor resources
  • Provides job instruction as well as work direction to other trades/ classifications as required. May coordinate work among other trades/ classifications

  • In consideration of the University's commitment to the safety and wellbeing of all faculty, support staff, students, and visitors, ensures all assigned activities are performed in compliance with all applicable legislation, regulations, codes and standards related to facilities operations as well as occupational health and environmental safety. Adheres to departmental policy, procedures and safe work practices and complies with relevant health and safety legislation, developing and enhancing a safety culture among support staff
  • Maintains current health and safety certifications in all areas required to perform the functions of the position

Other

  • May assist with the sourcing and requisitioning of materials, supplies, tools and support equipment / services
  • Works cooperatively with other trades, service providers and contractors
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned and supports departmental activities, including performing work of other classifications within scope of trade practice, level of incumbent's capability/ competency/ skills, and/or regulatory requirements
  • May perform work of a lower classification/ pay band

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Current Certificate of Qualification as a Painter and Decorator
  • Commercial and Residential (404C) required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years recent commercial experience as a painter
  • Work experience within major institutional sector(s), such as education, postsecondary education, medical/ hospital or related construction industry, is preferred
  • Sound working knowledge of the trade, including techniques, finishes and ability to match and mix colours.
  • Ability to work from ladders, scaffolding and personnel lifts
  • Understanding of job safety procedures and the ability to properly use required PPE (e.g. work at heights)
  • Customer service and team oriented
  • Selfmotivated, and able to work successfully with mínimal supervision
  • Capable of reading and interpreting building drawings and documentation is desirable
  • Valid Class G Driver's License
