Limestone District School Board, located on the shores of Lake Ontario proudly serves approximately 20,000 students at 49 elementary schools, 10 secondary schools, and Limestone Community Education Centres in the Townships Central Frontenac, Addington Highlands, North Frontenac, South Frontenac, Loyalist and Stone Mills, as well the Town of Greater Napanee and Kingston and the Islands.

Our school district covers a geographic area of 7,719 square kilometers and includes more than 3,000,000 square feet of Board facilities.


POSITION PURPOSE


To provide interpreting/translating and other support services to Deaf/hard of hearing students in regular education environments in order to facilitate communication between the students, hearing peers and school personnel.


SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide interpretation and support services to a student who is Deaf and uses American Sign Language (ASL)

Act as a liaison with school personnel, students, home and other professionals

Interpret activities during the regular school day (eg. field trips, assemblies, etc.)

Assist with support and implementation of educational goals in the classroom

Prepare for all classroom activities by acquainting oneself with the necessary materials and vocabulary

Identify and adjust language level to match comprehension of Deaf students

Provide instructional reinforcement as needed

Assist with the implementation of all aspects of the Individual Education Plan (IEP)

Participate in IEP meetings and parent/teacher meetings as appropriate

Interpret and facilitate communication during extracurricular activities

Increase personal understanding of education for Deaf/hard of hearing students through consultation with qualified professionals and relevant resources

Help school personnel and students understand the role of an Educational Interpreter

Support and participate in activities aimed at raising awareness of and educating students, staff and the school community about Deaf Culture

Other related duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS
College or University ASL/English Interpreter Training Program

Hold certification by the Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada (AVLIC)


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
Excellent expressive and receptive ASL skills

Excellent written and spoken English skills

Knowledge of child and language development

Knowledge of the basic principles of educational practices, the function of support services, and the role of interpreters as part of an educational team

Experience working in an educational setting preferred

Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of the student's educational team

Demonstrated resourcefulness, flexibility and sensitivity in changing learning environments

Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
