The Clean Transportation Branch develops and implements leading-edge legislation, policies, and programs to decarbonize and increase the energy efficiency of the transportation sector and spur growth in the clean transportation industry in B.C.

The legislation, policies and programs for which it is responsible are worth hundreds of millions of dollars and focus on transitioning the transportation sector, which accounts for 37% of B.C.s emissions, across all modes to zero-or-low carbon.

This work is critical to meeting the Province's greenhouse gas reduction targets, and ensuring B.C. thrives in the low-carbon economy of the future. Current transportation actions directly delivered (e.g. Zero-Emission Vehicles (ZEV) Act, Go Electric programs) or enabled (e.g. B.C.Low Carbon Fuel Standard) by the Clean Transportation Branch's policies and programs account for 32% of Government's CleanBC plan's estimated reductions or 24% of the total reductions needed to achieve Government's 2030 legislated targets. Transportation actions led by the Division are the single largest contributor to Government's legislated emissions reduction targets.

Work under the Branch is undertaken in coordination or partnership with other ministries, all levels of government within Canada, international governments, industry, utilities, non-government organizations, academic institutions, and public interest groups.

The Data Scientist is the expert data scientist for the Clean Transportation Branch for large scale, complex projects. Clean Transportation Branch wide programs/and or projects which are significant in terms of government priorities and have unique requirements. This position applies expert advice and knowledge pertaining to all overarching data science to unique business scenarios.


The Data Scientist is expected to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position with minimum supervision, maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.

The Data Scientist must exercise initiative, tact and diplomacy in undertaking a wide variety of responsibilities.

Job Requirements:


  • A Master's Degree in a related field and 2 years of related experience;
  • A Bachelor's Degree in a related field and 3 years of related experience; or
  • A Diploma in a related field and 5 years of related experience.

Related Education fields may include:
Data Science, Computer Science, GIS, statistics, mathematics, or other relevant specialty education as designated by program requirements.


Related experience includes:


  • Experience at leveraging structured and unstructured data sources to conduct quantitative analysis.
  • Experience determining appropriate use of various problem structuring methods and statistical methods for sampling, distribution assessment, bias and error.
  • Familiarity with machine learning, clustering and classification techniques to analyze diverse sources of data.
  • Experience creating and delivering executivelevel presentations for the purpose of decision making.
  • Willing to keep up to date with cuttingedge techniques in machinelearning and big data analytics and find ways to advance the organization's capabilities in analytics.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new technologies on the job.
  • Experience using common data science languages (e.g. SQL, R, Python) to manipulate data and draw insights from large data sets.
  • Experience with business intelligence tools (e.g. Tableau, Metabase).

Preference Statements:


  • Education or work experience directly related to alternative energy and/or clean transportation.
  • Education or work experience directly related to zeroemission vehicles and infrastructure.
