    Job Summary
  • This position is responsible for providing communication access to Deaf and hardofhearing students using TypeWell software on notebook computers. Provides transcription services, maintains statistical data and provides feedback/insight on communication strategies.
    Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • 1. Provides transcription services during lectures, labs, tests, field trips, work experience, tutoring sessions, interviews, counselling sessions, college events, between Deaf and hardofhearing students, their peers, instructors and others.
  • 2. Explains the transcriber's role to administrators, instructors, faculty and staff.
  • 3. Utilizes feedback from students, instructors and team members and makes any necessary adjustments to the transcription.
  • 4. Prepares for assignments and obtains the required preparatory materials (lecture notes, print materials, films, videos or resources pertaining to technical vocabulary).
  • 5. Compiles and records transcribing statistical data daily/weekly in the department database. 7. Identifies problems related to the provision of transcribed materials by consulting with the coordinator, the student and/or the instructor to find solutions that meet the needs of all stakeholders.
  • 8. Provides support and feedback to team members.
  • 9. Provides insight on the success of communication strategies and transcribed materials to the coordinator, instructors and other members of the educational team.
  • 10. Performs other related duties as required.
    Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Completion of 2 years' Community College and TypeWell transcribing course and 2 years' related experience or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience may be substituted for the required qualifications.

Note:

TypeWell transcriber experience must be within the last 2 years or proof of taking a refresher course is required.

  • Proven interpersonal skills with the ability work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and faculty.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of Deaf culture and issues facing Deaf, hardofhearing and Deafblind people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage several timesensitive tasks at any given time. Ability to adapt to changing situations.
  • Ability to listen to and understand fastpaced spoken English and rapidly restate the full meaning of what is heard in grammatically sound English sentences.
  • Ability to efficiently set up and take down equipment, identify routine operational problems and take corrective action to resolve them.
  • Possesses a clear understanding of ethics, history and best practices of the field and remains current on issues related to the field of transcribing.
  • Ability to accurately record hours worked.
  • Minimum of 65 nwpm.

Salary Range - Prorated based on FTE

  • PAYGRADE 25 $29.94 to $35.12 hourly, plus payment in lieu of vacation and statutory holidays.
