Position Summary


The Radiation Safety Office is a dynamic team committed to continually raising safety awareness, improving radiation safety standards, participating in decision making and consultation, providing timely and effective responses, and creating/sustaining an environment that inspires trust, integrity, collaboration and personal responsibility.

The Radiation Safety Specialist plays a key role in this team, dedicated to ensuring that this commitment is sustained.


Duties

  • Preparing technical reports regarding radiation safety including but not limited to shielding reports, dose reconstruction and assessment from unplanned events, and hazards/environmental assessments related to radioactive material and radiation emitting devices
  • Assist the Radiation Safety Officers (RSO) in ensuring compliance with the radiation safety program at the UHN, in accordance with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Regulations, provincial xray safety regulations and UHN radiation safety polices;
  • Assisting the RSO with investigating and reporting, as well as with initial assistance to radiation safety needs and initial response to emergencies;
  • Assists in the development, delivery and evaluation of radiation safety courses, guidelines and documents specific to UHN employees and other interested parties as required
  • Providing basic radiation protection information to all staff in radiation work areas;
  • Acting as a contact on internal radiation matters;
  • Assisting in the management of a comprehensive electronic database of radiation safety related activities and items;
  • Assisting in the provision of technical services;
  • Performing other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.

Qualifications

  • At a minimum, Bachelor of Science in a relevant scientific discipline (i.e. Health and Radiation Physics, Medical Physics, Radiation Biology) from a recognized institution with 3 years experience, or recognized equivalent program in an imaging discipline (i.e. Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy) with 5 years experience, or recognized equivalent
  • Three (3) five (5) years of recent, related professional operational radiation safety experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Previous experience as a NEW (Nuclear Energy Worker) or xray work an asset
  • Must have knowledge of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, its regulations and guidelines and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Acts and its regulations.
  • Knowledge of Ontario xray safety regulations an asset
  • Ability to pay critical attention to detail to facilitate accuracy and completeness in the work process required
  • Excellent interpersonal, report writing and communication skills
  • Excellent problem recognition and problemsolving skills
  • Effective organizational and time management skills; ability to organize work and set priorities
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education
  • Experience with teaching and training of staff preferred
  • Experience working in healthcare and a teaching hospital environment an asset
