  • The City is making a transformational cultural shift on how we approach Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). As a Safety Advisor, you will be responsible for supporting safety management systems and being the ambassador of our safety culture. You will be embedded with our clients to ensure they receive high quality customer service, proactive initiatives and safe workplaces.

Primary duties include:

  • As part of a team, develop strategies and objectives for the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS).
  • Support development and implementation of the corporate OHSMS.
  • Collaborate with your client's leadership teams, for example: Water Utility, Calgary Transit, Parks, Engineering, and Facility Management
  • Deliver coaching, mentoring, training, and orientation support.
  • Provide incident management, emergency response planning and hazard assessment oversight for Supervisors and Managers.
  • Provide ongoing communication related to the OHSMS, corporate initiatives and key performance indicators for your client's management teams.
  • Assist with managing contractors including prequalifying, reviewing safety plans, monitoring and guidance for the contract managers.

Qualifications
***- A completed certificate in Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Project Management, Change Management, Communications, Adult Learning, or related area and at least 5 years of safety related experience is required.

  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits, or a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, with no current suspensions or charges pending is required.
  • Related certifications such as National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO), Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC), Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) and/ or Project Management Professional (PMP) and completed or working towards a Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation (CRSP) will be considered assets.

Knowledge of change management, training, auditing, investigating, technical writing, project management, and contractor management combined with operational/project experience in a large complex organization dealing with multiple partners and implementing large programs will also be considered assets.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong decision making skills, political acumen, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively in stressful situations.


Working Conditions:
Exposure to outdoor worksites and various weather conditions.


Pre-employment RequirementsMust obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
