Position Summary

  • The OTA/PTA is responsible for implementing occupational therapy and physiotherapy interventions with patients in the community setting, or in hospital under the supervision of a registered Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist when organizational needs arise. This involves both direct patient care and nonpatient care.
  • PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Patient Care:
  • Providing advanced level of support in assisting Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists in the provision of individual and group rehabilitative programs for patients.
  • Assisting patients in preparation for and as necessary, during and at the conclusion of individual/group treatment.
  • Assisting in the fabrication of assistive devices.
  • Preparing equipment and accessories.
  • Assisting patients in the safe practice of activities related to the development of strength and endurance and functional activities including but not limited to Activities of Daily Living assigned by the Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist.
  • Assisting patients in ambulatory training procedures as assigned.
  • Ensuring patient and personal safety at all times, knows emergency procedures (fire stat and cardiac arrest) and acts on them as necessary.
  • Performing selected treatment procedures which are commensurate with their training and are assigned them by the Senior Physiotherapist/Occupation Therapist and/or Physiotherapists/Occupational Therapists.
  • Observing patient response to treatment and relates relevant information regarding their behaviour and performance in Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy to the supervising therapist.
  • Participating in the quality program and maintaining quality assurance in all aspects of patient care.
  • Maintaining and cleaning up the treatment areas i.e. changing linen and storing equipment as indicated and adhering to infection control procedures.
  • Transporting of patients as indicated.
  • Documenting accurate and full written records of patient involvement, response and communication in group activities.
  • Informing supervising Occupational Therapist of Physiotherapist immediately of any change in patient status.
Performs other duties as may be assigned by the direct manager, physiotherapist, or occupational therapist


Qualifications:


  • Education:
  • Graduate of a recognized Occupational Therapy Assistant/Physiotherapy Assistant educational program is required.
  • Increasing current level of knowledge through continuing education, literature, reviews, observation, and practical involvement.
  • Attending and participating in departmental inservice program.
  • Participating in inservice education to Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Staff.
  • Assisting in Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist in educational programs for hospital staff and community agencies.
  • Participating in orientation of new Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy staff.

Experience:


  • Two (2) three (3) years recent OTA/PTA work experience required
  • Previous experience in an Occupational Therapy Department, Physiotherapy Department or a Rehabilitation setting a requirement.
  • Community experience is required.
