Under the supervision of the Director of Administration, the incumbent ensures the optimal condition and use of the Comparative Medicine and Animal Resources Centre (CMARC) animal facilities' infrastructure and equipment for a cost-effective operation.

Assures that the department meets high standards of quality, in compliance with best practices, SOPs, university policies, and Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) guidelines governing the care and use of animals in research.

Responsible for the development and implementation of policies and initiatives that stem from the department's strategic plan as well as infrastructure and equipment inspections, audits, maintenance schedules, financial impact of down time ,and project oversight.

Provides training and coaching to all CMARC employees on the proper use and maintenance of equipment and infrastructure.


Primary Duties:


Ensures the optimal condition and use of the Comparative Medicine and Animal Resources Centre (CMARC) animal facilities' infrastructure and equipment for a cost-effective operation.

Provides training and coaching to all CMARC employees on the proper use and maintenance of equipment and infrastructure.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Works with Facilities Project Managers on all internal projects related to maintenance, repairs, renovation and construction of CMARC facilities and equipment to ensure compliance with the CCAC requirements.
  • Supervise a team of employees who perform activities linked to equipment and infrastructure.
  • Plans and organizes work flows to ma maximize the use of personnel within operating budget of functional unit.
  • Negotiates service contracts and allocates budgetary resources to sufficiently acquire new equipment based on priorities established in strategic planning.
  • Establishes yearly budget for equipment and infrastructure to maintain a costeffective operational unit and positively contribute to the center's financial wellbeing.
  • Analyzes infrastructure and equipment deficiencies, and establishes new procedures to maximize the efficient and longstanding use of the equipment.
  • Maintains files of warranties, records, licenses, inspections, service agreements, and contracts for various pieces of equipment.
  • Schedules and develops metrics to regularly review the departmental needs and makes appropriate recommendations.
  • Develops and maintains standard operating procedures for infrastructure and equipment maintenance and operation
  • Recommends new policies and procedures.
  • Interacts with Operations Managers, Facilities Project Managers, Building Services, and external service providers to plan maintenance, repairs, renovations, and new constructions.
  • Evaluates maintenance schedules and regularly inspects facilities to ensure optimal infrastructure and equipment condition in compliance with SOPs, university policies and CCAC guidelines.
  • Mentors, coaches, and trains facility employees involved in the operation and maintenance of equipment and infrastructure.
  • Establishes and monitors controls to ensure compliance with SOPs and schedules.
  • Maintains the inventory, storage, and distribution of equipment.
  • Researches, perform cost analysis and recommend purchase of new equipment.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • Ability to understand the unique operational impacts of infrastructure construction or renovation in a laboratory animal context.
  • Ability to understand the unique research impact and timesensitive nature of work that is planned within animal housing areas.
  • Ability to understand fluid delivery systems, compressed gas systems, hydraulic power systems, filtration systems, ventilation systems and lowvoltage electrical controls.

Knowledge of French and English:

McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing.

The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 on a scale of 0-4.

Must be available on week end on rotation.
