Position Description


Applications are invited to teach the following courses in the Fall 2023 and Winter 2024 sessions for the Division of Dance, School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA).

Lectures for the Fall 2023 term run from September 5 to December 6, 2023, and lectures for the Winter 2024 term run from January 8 to April 9, 2024.

Course description:
Introductory study of the techniques of contemporary dance.

Elementary Contemporary Dance I


Course dates:

Course description:
Elementary study of the techniques of contemporary dance.


DNCE 211:
Introductory Jazz Dance


Course dates:

Course description:
Introductory study of the techniques of jazz dance.


DNCE 231:
Introductory Dance Theory and Practice


Course dates:

Course description:
An introduction to the principles of dance writing in combination with movement analysis skills.

Focusses on the identification and articulation of one¿s identity as a mover in the context of current and historical movement trends.

Modern and Contemporary Dance History

Course description:

In depth study of western modern and contemporary dance theatre practices with particular focus on twentieth century to present.


DNCE 407/507:
Intermediate/Advanced Contemporary Dance


Course dates:

Course description:
This completes the sequence of intermediate study of the techniques of contemporary dance. / Further advanced study of the techniques of contemporary dance.

Dance Pedagogy:
Community Populations


Course dates:
January - April 9, 2024
Mondays and Wednesdays, 8:00 to 9:50

Course description:

An overview of the approaches to dance pedagogy for teaching varied community populations, including adults, seniors, mixed ability and pre-school children etc.


DNCE 493:
Dance Teaching Practicum


Course dates:
January - April 9, 2024

Days and times:

Course description:
Practical experience teaching dance in school and recreational settings.
Hiring for 0.5 HCE


Qualifications/Requirements:


  • Preferred qualification: possession of MFA or PhD in Dance or Interdisciplinary MFA or PhD with a dance focus

Minimum qualification:
MA, BA or BFA degree in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis.

  • Professional experience recognized by peers in the field
  • Outstanding professional achievement or substantial training in the field specified in the job announcement.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities.
  • Demonstrated evidence of successful teaching experience at the university level.

Desirable Skills and Abilities:


  • Energy, enthusiasm and commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • The willingness to work with students having a wide range of skills, varying abilities, motivations, and academic or vocational goals.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with others in a team environment.
  • The ability to use instructional strategies designed for diverse learning styles and academic goals.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of current literature on dance.
