Role Description:


The Materials Testing Lab Manager oversees the receipt inspection activities for materials and the laboratory testing activities of various materials to determine their mechanical and physical properties.

The Manager provides leadership, guidance and support to the receiving inspectors and lab staff.

In this role, you will:


  • Manage all aspects of the receiving inspection (RI) and the material testing lab, testing/inspection personnel, and equipment.
  • Schedule, assign, and monitor testing and RI personnel and equipment to accommodate varying and dynamic project schedules.
  • Maintain and manage laboratory and equipment calibrations, qualifications, etc.
  • Implement and maintain established procedures, work instructions, test plans and others associated procedures related to testing or RI processes.
  • Support development activities, RI and testing
  • Interface with customers, suppliers and other Stelia leadership to resolve technical or quality issues, keeping in mind the business reality of continuing work.
  • Drive process improvements and cost savings through quality metrics and utilizing a continuous improvement mentality.
  • Perform quality checks and identify nonconforming conditions in material and procured products.
  • Perform analysis to assess and determine the cause of test failures, products, or materials that do not meet required standards and specifications.
  • Support new business proposals and program start ups.
  • Consult with other managers to formulate objectives and understand requirements.
  • Coordinate and support of audits (e.g., internal, customer audits, third party)
  • Lead, mentor, coach, and guide team members, enabling them to develop excellent performance and to achieve their career aspirations. Lead and facilitate all aspects of the people processes to ensure departmental success.

You have:


  • University degree in Engineering / Science or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years' experience leading people or functions.
  • 5+ years' experience in an aerospace, defence, or related manufacturing environment.
  • 3+ years' experience in AS/EN 9100, ISO 9001 or NADCAP, including audit experience.
  • ASQ designation is an asset (e.g., Quality Manager, Auditor, Quality Engineer).
  • Knowledge of material laboratory practices, procedures, and industry standards (e.g., ASTM, ISO, EN, MIL-STD, etc.)
  • Knowledge and experience of problem solving (e.g., root cause analysis, 5 Whys)
  • Strong understanding of data, analytics, computers and M36
  • Ability to train people and explain work instructions and/or specifications.
  • Ability to use lab equipment and wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Actionoriented and willing to challenge status quo.
  • Strong decisionmaking skills and resultdriven (safety, quality, cost) approach.
  • Ability to create accountability and to lead by example.
  • Ability to interact professionally with diverse groups and departments.
  • Proficient in M365 and ERP software
  • Emotional intelligence skillset to connect authentically, communicate effectively, and thrive collectively daily and lead change in the workplace.
