  • POSITION OVERVIEW
The AVP Corporate Sustainability is part of the Sustainability and Diversity team in BDC's Strategy and Impact Unit.

The role is responsible for directing, developing, and implementing strategies, programs and initiatives that ensure BDC will meet its sustainability-related goals and commitments.


The AVP will lead a team of sustainability professionals, working across the organisation to implement BDC's sustainability strategy, associated programs and key projects.

They will be responsible for communicating with executives, employees, strategic partners and clients.

This position requires a deep understanding of sustainability, including the interactions among economic, social and environmental issues.

The AVP will have experience managing, leading and implementing corporate sustainability initiatives and efforts, communicating company efforts, priorities and initiatives to key stakeholders, and will support senior leaders in raising BDC's profile on sustainability topics.


CHALLENGES TO BE MET
Governance and oversight- Lead the team recognised as BDC's environmental sustainability centre of expertise.

Take a leadership role in building BDC's corporate sustainability programs and initiatives nationally.- Provide guidance and expertise in climate change and sustainability within BDC.

Maintain a repository of research on industry best practices, and benchmarking of peer activities, and disseminate across BDC.- Develop the annual corporate sustainability plan for BDC.- Maintain and disseminate knowledge regarding environmental regulations and standards applicable to BDC and to our clients.- Support the Senior VP, Sustainability and Diversity in establishing and leading BDC's Sustainability Council, and in preparing Board and Senior Management updates on Sustainability when required.


Operations- Support the development of responsible procurement polices and strategies; Advocate for and support implementation of programs related to reducing the environmental footprint - including our net zero strategy - in BDC's operations.- Ensure staff training programs in sustainability.

Support the Environmental/Sustainability ERG.

Products and services- Identify opportunities for innovative sustainability-related products, services, advice and programs (e

g:
Support for diverse clients, energy efficiency audits for commercial mortgage clients, social impact fund, etc.).- Working collaboratively within BDC, oversee and manage projects to assist BDC clients in their efforts to identify and manage environmental risks and opportunities.- Provide environmental information and expertise to support account managers in client relationships.- Collaborate with the Risk Management team to appropriately embed environmental and social considerations in risk adjudication.


Community and External- Develop, sponsor and disseminate research and information on sustainability matters, through the Climate Advice Centre, BDC's website, social media, and other channels.- Promote sustainability/ESG in entrepreneurial networks, sponsor and host select conferences and events.- Oversee the identification and management of national sustainability partnerships, sponsorships and memberships, including negotiation, activation, and relationship management.- Join and support professional membership associations and maintain a network of sustainability executives in Canada and globally.- Work closely with the Marketing team to develop and execute sustainability messaging and engagement activities.
