Description

Nature of the work:

  • The job of adapted services counsellor involves analysis, support, facilitation and advisory functions regarding students with disabilities. They collaborate in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the organization and offering of services to these students, in addition to ensuring the intake referral and learning support functions.

Responsibilities:


  • Conduct intake interviews with new students in order to receive and review medical documentation and psychoeducational evaluation reports
  • Meet with new and returning students to determine reasonable accommodations required
  • Establish Individual Education Plans, ensure their implementation, make the necessary adjustments and propose recommendations or accommodations
  • Establish and update the records of students with disabilities
  • Conduct followup meetings with students to review midterm assessments, educational goals, update accommodation requests, and to provide support when necessary
  • Determine reasonable accommodation for the English Exit exam
  • Provide assistance, when required, for students in course selection, preregistration, and online exam registration
  • Participate in case studies with the AccessAbility team
  • Advise faculty members seeking guidance in regards to reasonable accommodations and student learning needs
  • Refer students to internal and external services such as Counselling, Financial Aid, Academic Skills Centre, resources in the community
  • Consult with professionals from other internal and external support services
  • Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings
  • Plan and organize community awareness and information activities
  • Provide consultation to Dawson faculty and personnel whose research interests focus on people with disabilities
  • Participates in CRISPESH activities
  • Perform other related duties

Requirements:


  • Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in an appropriate field of specialization, particularly in special education.
  • Conditions:
  • Relevant experience in working with students with special needs & documented diagnoses
  • Advanced communication skills in English and French oral and written (testing may be required)
  • Basic knowledge of computers and software (testing may be required)
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse student population
  • Ability to function within a collaborative environment
