About the Organization

Job Summary

  • Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Technician will be responsible for recombinant silk protein production and purification, including optimization of both of these processes. Spinning into fibres and production of other biomaterials will also be carried out by the Research Technician and they will be expected to characterize proteins and biomaterials independently using disparate techniques. It is also expected that they will provide both routine and nonroutine technical support to all members of the research team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clone, express, and purify recombinant proteins, including the preparation of required reagents, media, cells, etc.
  • Characterize nucleic acids and proteins through e.g. electrophoresis, chromatography, spectroscopy, and microscopy techniques.
  • Maintain and validate key laboratory equipment.
  • Coordinate chemical and biological material inventory maintenance and stocking/ordering.
  • Assist with safe research protocols and operation of laboratory equipment for users, including developing and maintaining standard operating protocols.
  • Provide comprehensive and clear documentation of all work carried out, whether for publication purposes and/or for communication with 3D BioFibR as a partner.

Note
Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to meet operational requirements.
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, or in a relevant field with research experience, as demonstrated through completion of coop workterms, an honours project and/or graduate research project, or equivalent.
  • Research or employment experience in protein expression and purification; biophysical characterization of proteins; and/or, biomaterials production/evaluation.
  • Strong analytical skills to rigorously and reliably carry out technical procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.

Assets

  • Masters degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, or in a relevant field.
