The Senior Director, Professional Practice, Nursing for PHSA Corporate Services reports to the Executive Director, Professional Practice and Policy Office and is accountable for providing strategic, operational and educational leadership for nursing professional practice across PHSA programs and services in accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic directions of the organization.

Working in collaboration with the professional practice departments within the PHSA programs and services, guides and directs the development of professional standards and practice, and facilitates collaboration and standardization of nursing professional practice across PHSA sites as appropriate.

Provides leadership, strategic direction and mentoring in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of orientation, professional practice standards, evidence informed clinical practice, education training and ongoing professional growth.

Provides expert advice on nursing and professional practice issues, including resource planning and research, and input into professional development needs.

Plays an integral part in defining the quality of care processes and creating quality practice environments in collaboration with the quality directors within the PHSA programs and services.

Liaises, influences and consults with various stakeholders to develop, promote and advance interprofessional practice and education and to enhance the profile of nursing.

Develops working partnerships with other Health Authorities, the Ministry of Health, colleges, universities, professional associations and regulatory bodies. Supervises staff, develops and manages operating budgets and represents PHSA nursing and professional practice regionally, provincially and nationally.


What you'll do

  • Provides strategic, operational and education leadership for nursing practice. Develops networks to enhance knowledge sharing, monitors operational/professional practice trends, identifies opportunities that promote innovation and partnerships for improvement, and ensures consistent delivery of quality operational nursing practice throughout the organization. Develops a vision and strategies for education and research, encouraging and supporting a variety of educational activities, ensuring educational focus and approaches are consistent with current research findings.
  • Establishes interprofessional practice and education across PHSA as a model of care and service provision. Engages PHSA professional practice program and operational leadership, as well as physician leaders in establishing an interprofessional practice model. Leads and participates in the overall development, implementation, administration and evaluation of nursing practice operational and educational strategies across PHSA. Fosters collaboration amongst the program based professional practice departments and ensures consistency with standards of professional practice and evidencebased educational methodology.
  • Develops, plans, implements and evaluates professional clinical standards, policies, and procedures for nursing professional practice that align with PHSA program goals, and in collaboration with the PHSA program professional practice departments.
  • Reviews literature, monitors trends and practices and identifies opportunities to promote innovation and exploration of new initiatives and technology in professional practice. Directs the organization on trends/issues impacting programs and/or PHSA wide directions and goals.
  • Develops, recommends and implements, in collaboration with the Executive Director, Professional Practice and Policy Office, strategies for recruitment and retention of staff that support the goals of PHSA. Collaborations with Human Resources to achieve recommendations.
  • Identifies, leads, implements, and monitors quality improvement initiatives. Takes a leadership role in developing, implementing, and evaluating strategies that support patientcentred, safe, competent, and ethical practice by promoting evidencebased practice, including being a key champion for quality. Ensures appropriate communication of changes and updates.
  • Works collaboratively with provincial, clinical and regional leaders to establish and develop practice councils and committees, interdisciplinary practice council and interdisciplinary quality assurance and quality initiative frameworks, and professional practice linkages within the PHSA, regional Health Authorities, and community agencies.
