Laboratory Based Commercial Product Development Assistant (Co-op)

We currently, we have an opening for a Commercial Product Development Assistant (Co-op)**
in our Commercial Product Development division.
Labstat International is looking to host various students from the Hamilton and GTA area for 4 or 8-month co-ops. You will gain laboratory experience method development for _in vitro_ Toxicology and Microbiology.


This position will conduct assigned tests and analyses under direct and general supervision in accordance with work order instructions and laboratory quality guidelines and procedures.

Some skills that will be learned are cell culture preparation, _in vitro_ cellular assays, flow cytometry and use of automated instrumentation.

Additionally, some data analysis work may be required.


In consultation with the Scientist assigned to a specific project, the CPD Assistant will be required to assist with all aspects of method development and method validation.

The CPD Assistant will be primarily responsible for completing and documenting the duties normally associated with the _in vitro_ cell culture-based assays.

This position requires the CPD Assistant to work independently, while maintaining accurate records/notes with respect to qualitative and quantitative observations that may be used to guide decisions during the method development process.


Primary responsibilities of the job:


The level of testing will be aligned to skills, abilities and experience of the individual student based on their specific education.


  • Work as a team with others and communicate effectively with peers and superiors.
  • Perform equipment and instrument calibrations according to establish procedures.
  • Stage samples and work packages for release into the laboratory for testing
  • Perform basic testing such as but not limited to cell counting, pH, Osmolality, flow cytometry analysis, fluorescent microscopy, and sample extraction.
  • Perform basic testing as per GLP and Labstat's SOP's.
  • Prepare test solutions, sample, and or reagents as needed.
  • Prepare and standardize Test solutions, Standard solutions and Volumetric solutions.
  • Maintain cell culture solutions, stock solutions etc., for expiry and inventory.
  • Maintain clean and stocked workstations ensuring spills are immediately cleaned; hazardous waste disposal according to laboratory procedures, glassware is appropriately handled, and lab solutions are replaced.
  • Maintain good housekeeping, schedule and monitor housekeeping activities.
  • Ensure that work order documentation is complete in every aspect and all results are entered into the LIMS system or the Client's Certificate of Analysis before submission to the QA reviewer.
  • Lead laboratory and supply maintenance activities, ensuring all scheduled activities are completed and signed off by the manager or designate.
  • Prioritize, schedule and plan daily work in order to maintain efficient workflow to assure completion of scheduled tasks and to meet established due dates The employee shall implement the Laboratory Quality Policy and perform their duties in accordance to existing project specific requirements, current Test Methods, study plans and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Compliance to Health & Safety policies and procedures and wear required Personal Protective equipment at all times
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Currently enrolled in third or fourth year in a Science (Biology, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Cellular Biology, Microbiology) related diploma, degree (B.Sc./BA) or;
  • Higher level (M.Sc.) program (Biology, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Cellular Biology, Microbiology, etc.)
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge in _in vitro_ cell based assays as per SOP or operation manual.
  • Cell culture techniques
  • Mechanical aptitude demonstrated by previous work experience.
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge with laboratory equipment and techniques such as the use of analytical balances and volumetric glassware (pipettes, flasks, etc).
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge with the handling of chemicals and the preparation of solutions.
  • Hand/Eye coordination, ability to stand out, think outside the box.
  • Able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
