Description of position


The Life Skills program is a multi-faceted service that has been running since the early 80's, offering individuals a wide range of center and community-based services.

Our diverse, talented, and experienced staff continually strives to expand the participant's horizons and life opportunities.

We place a strong emphasis on developing confidence through meaningful activities and learning experiences that promote healthy relationships, self-expression, and inclusiveness for clients in their own communities.

Person-centered, we endeavour to assist a range of clients in progressing to their highest potential while also providing ongoing support to ensure long-term stability and quality of life.


General Responsibilities:


  • Supporting clients with personal care needs as needed
  • Behaviour and communication support
  • Direct client support through modeling and teaching
  • Reporting and documentation
  • Engaging in positive and meaningful support with service users
  • Working cohesively with a team of caring and compassionate professionals
  • Ability to work independently in the community with clients in their homes/community.
  • Understanding of the personcentered approach

Program-Specific Responsibilities:


  • To develop a supportive rapport with clients in service while providing interest, empathy, and encouragement while working on their personal goals
  • To teach functional life skills for daily living
  • Able to actively seek out and implement/participate in new/existing, community/ social/ vocational/ recreational/employment opportunities and experiences. This includes recreational activities such as swimming, bowling, and cooking but is not limited to those activities. Staff is expected to include planning on the monthly client activity calendar.
  • To be competent with teaching and using augmentative visual communication tools such as pictures, PECS, sign language, etc.
  • To be comfortable with providing personal care for clients
  • To be competent and punctual with data entry and analysis such as through log entries and report writing
  • To be able to transport clients in the community using program vehicles as well as using and maintaining the safe operational standards of personal vehicles (for the L-Nav program)
  • To be comfortable with supporting clients who may potentially exhibit risk behavior's.
  • To liaise with various program/ client stakeholders including family members, businesses, and other professionals
  • To be able to fulfill cleaning/building maintenance requirements in the Life Skills Center and at clients' homes if working in the LNAV Program
  • All staff are required to be flexible with their schedule to meet the needs of the program. All staff will be required to work in all LSC programs when the need arises.

Qualifications:


  • Effectively utilize Office suite including Excel, Word, Outlook, and central data systems
  • Minimum 1year postsecondary education, preferably in behavior sciences, social work, community social services, or the demonstrated equivalent through past work experience
  • Effectively communicate professionally, verbally, and written in English
  • Criminal Records check through the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Criminal Records Review Program
  • A minimum of a Class 7 Driver's license to start with the expectation of successfully attaining a Class 4 unrestricted license within a reasonable amount of time upon hire. Permanent staff working more than 75% of their schedule in the LNAV Program are exempt from this requirement. (Medical and Class of license held currently will be taken into consideration for timeline expectations)
