About us:


Your opportunity:

The Health and Safety Officer (HSO) works under the direction of the Manager, Research Regulatory Affairs. The HSO provides health and safety services to the faculty, administrative staff, and students of the University of Toronto.

The HSO interacts with a wide range of people, such as faculty, staff, students, suppliers, other University compliance officers, vendors, contractors and researchers, to provide information and advice on safe radiation work practices and biosafety compliance measures (permit and training requirements).

Additional responsibilities include implementing and supporting various EHS programs within established University policies and procedures and ensuring compliance with federal and provincial regulations.

The HSO also works collaboratively with other EHS staff, including the Occupational Hygiene Safety Specialist (OHSS), and the Manager, Environmental Protection, to perform duties across the University in areas such as lab inspections, waste management, and risk identification/mitigation.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Implementing plans and process improvements for program and health, safety and compliance permit activities
  • Providing advice to others on biosafety, chemical, radiation and/or other safety requirements, best practices and procedures as applicable.
  • Providing advice to others on emergency response processes and preparedness.
  • Overseeing the commissioning process for buildings and/or facilities.
  • Preparing detailed risk assessment analysis and making mitigation and safety practices recommendations.
  • Analyzing and recommending corrective actions to meet health and safety requirements.
  • Investigating and reporting onhealth, safety and regulatory noncompliance occurrences.
  • Providing safety training and ensuring adherence to safety procedures and standards.

Essential Qualifications:


  • Master's Degree in a related field (e.g. science, medical sciences, engineering) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years of related experience, including demonstrated experience in principles and practices of biosafety, biosecurity and biorisk management in a large academic, public or healthcare setting.
  • Professional Certification in Health Physics/Safety/Safety Engineering/Industrial Hygiene/ Occupational Health and Safety/Biosafety (one or more of RBP (CABS), CBSP (ABSA), CRPA(R),CHP, CRSP, PEng, CIH/ROH).
  • Professional Certification/Registration in one or more of: Canadian Biological Safety Association (RBSO), American Biological Safety Association (RBP), Canadian Radiation Protection Association Health Physics Society, Association of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals, Occupational Hygiene Association of Ontario.
  • Experience with Containment Level 3 physical and operational practices
  • Experience with formal teaching or training in an adult learning environment.
  • Knowledge of lab design, performance testing and decommissioning
  • Working knowledge of Powerpoint, Excel, Word
  • Strong problemsolving and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent communication, written and verbal, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills, tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines; strong organizational and time management skills

Assets (Nonessential):


  • Experience working in a large University or public sector environment.
  • Experience with project management tools and IT projects.
  • Experience with Environmental Health & Safety databases and database management.
  • Possess a valid Ontario driver's licence.
