New employees must provide documentation/proof of full COVID-19 vaccination status, a 2-step TB screening, as well as proof of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox) prior to their start date at St.

Mary's General Hospital. Staff will require clearance from Employee Health and Wellness before they are able to begin any position within SMGH.


Position Summary:


The role of the social worker is to provide direct specialized and comprehensive service to patients/clients, who have experienced sexual assault, and/or domestic violence, including human trafficking victims and children.

This includes on-call response, crisis intervention, consultation, follow-up counselling, and provision of information, referrals, recording, and testifying in court as required.

As well the social worker navigates systems, participates in committees and program development.

Our program recognizes that all individuals, despite gender, age, race, and identity, have a right to a life free of violence, and the right to services to aid in their recovery.

Our team works in partnership with many local resources geared to help clients receive the best care and support during their experience


Position Responsibilities:


  • Assess emotional and mental status of clients/patients who present at the hospital with a report of sexual assault and/or domestic violence, human trafficking, or child sexual abuse.
  • Evaluate client's/patient's concerns.
  • Provide trauma informed, client focused care
  • Provide thorough and sensitive explanation of the options for care provided by the WRSA/DVTC.
  • Provide crisis counselling, and resources
  • Provide short term followup counselling to clients/patients and their families who access the oncall team for acute services, as well as for those individuals who call the Centre for counselling.
  • Refer clients/patients to ongoing communitybased services where required
  • Liaison to various community agencies and groups providing support and services to victims of domestic and sexual violence including children and victims of human trafficking
  • Assist Nurse/Physician during forensic evidence collection.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate documentation according to professional and best practice standards.
  • Model the Way through exercising selfcontrol under pressure and effectively managing negative emotions.

  • Attend staff meetings, peer meetings and supervise when appropriate.
  • Work independently while communicating difficulties, concerns, questions to the Director of the WRSA/DVTC as soon as possible following an incident
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements:


  • MSW and current registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
  • Experience working with victims of domestic and sexual violence, and child sexual abuse.
  • Sound understanding of the feminist perspective.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Previous experience working with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Practices from Trauma Informed approached. Successfully able to perform their function in accordance with prescribed standards that focuses on the priority of People Safety and the delivery of the highest standard of Quality Care.
