***: Under the supervision of the Clinical Director/Clinical Manager, the School Mental Health Counsellor will provide intervention and direct supports and services to students (or children and youth) in schools or other locations considered an extension of the school. Using a variety of theoretical frameworks, the School Mental Health Counsellor will conduct individual therapy to promote change and growth within the youth and their family, home, school and community.


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor's Degree in social work or a relevant discipline (i.e. psychology, counselling, education)
  • Must be registered and in good standing with an appropriate professional regulatory college (e.g. Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (RSW), or the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario).
  • Training in Crisis Intervention, Brief Services, Risk Assessment, and Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioural Therapies are considered assets.
  • Training in Suicide Risk Assessment and Support is an asset.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in children's mental health and experience providing crisis intervention with children, and youth is preferred.
  • Travel is required for this position, a valid class G Ontario driver's license, access to a reliable vehicle and an acceptable driving record is required.
  • Knowledge of EMHware and ChYMH, an asset.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sectors Screening and Pre-Employment Medical.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Clients

  • As a member of a multidisciplinary team. the YFC I School Mental Health Worker would conduct assessments, compile histories and formulate a social diagnosis; this would include developing an understanding of the personal and environmental causes of behavior and emotional difficulties of youth. This is a crucial part of the job as it determines the course of treatment for clients.
  • Participate in Walk-In clinics offered at the School, Agency or with collaborative partners as assigned
  • Through the process of therapy, the therapist will work with youth to develop treatment plans to improve the emotional, behavioural and interpersonal wellbeing of clients in achieving optimum psychosocial functioning.
  • Critically evaluate and analyze information using multiple theoretical and conceptual bases in making professional, clinical judgments.
  • Support early identification and referrals for service.
  • Liaise with other disciplines, jurisdictions and community resources in delivering and evaluating treatment plans.
  • Work independently on as assigned caseload (mostly youth) within the framework of a treatment team. Minimal supervision and direction required.
  • Provide transition supports for students with mental health and addiction needs who are in the process of reentering school after periods of nonattendance.
  • Support educators to better identify and respond to mental health and addictions needs of students.
  • To develop, evaluate, modify and/or revise treatment plans.
  • To provide service by any one or a combination of recognized clinical methods including individual or group counseling.
  • To work effectively in conjunction with other community agencies in the development and delivery of treatment services for the adolescents in the program.
  • To participate in conferences and group discussions concerning adolescents in the program. To work cooperatively and negotiate effectively within the program and the agency and to maintain liaison with other disciplines, jurisdictions, community and outside resources.

Administration

  • Document treatment planning and maintain appropriate agency reports.
  • Ensure that all reports are kept in order and uptodate, including: case contact notes, treatment goals and reviews, EMH Ware, ChYMH etc.
  • Follow agency guidelines regarding percentage of direct service hours provided to families and youth.
  • To provide input into program evaluation and development.
  • Interface with teams and contacts designated within the School Board in the course of providing direct services and supports to individual students.
  • Case manages clients and has regular contact with clients on the wait list.
  • Attend and participate in clinical meetings

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:


  • In conjunction with supervisor, participate in regular supervision sessions and an annual performance evaluation.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled team meetings.
  • Attend and participate in In-Service training as scheduled and required and attend recommended professional development opportunities

WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Work may be performed in various program settings but is generally performed in the school
  • School locations may change based on local and changing needs of students and School Boards.
