Position Summary:
Reporting directly to the Associate Director, Mediation and Reporting, the Mediation and Investigation Advisor ("MIA") will respond to inquiries, conduct intake, and oversee the resolution of reports filed pursuant to the

  • Policy on Harassment and Discrimination_
and the

  • Policy against Sexual Violence_
("the Policies"). The MIS also plays a fundamental role in educating the McGill community about harassment, discrimination, and sexual violence as part of McGill University's ongoing efforts to create and maintain a climate that is respectful, equitable, and inclusive.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide nondirectional, accurate, and traumainformed responses to inquiries, and conduct intake of reports, regarding harassment, discrimination and/or sexual violence;
  • Conduct highlyskilled, timely, traumainformed, procedurally fair investigations into matters of harassment, discrimination, and/or sexual violence, which include careful analyses of documentary and testimonial evidence;
  • Write detailed, justified, clearly articulated reports produced from such investigations for submission to the Provost & Vice-Principal (Academic);
  • Lead mediation for parties seeking to resolve disputes outside of the formal investigative processes;
  • Contribute actively to the development of, and communications related to, McGill's Office for Mediation and Reporting (OMR);
  • Develop and deliver education, training, and outreach on McGill's commitment to a respectful, safe, and inclusive environment in a manner that is tailored to the diverse audiences and stakeholders within McGill's campus community;
  • Advise and collaborate with key campus partners, such as Human Resources, Legal Services, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, and the Office of the Dean of Students, to ensure that University policies are applied in accordance with their terms and in a manner that respects the principles of equity, confidentiality, traumainformed approaches, and procedural fairness;
  • Develop effective strategies to communicate and raise awareness about the Policies (e.g., website, poster campaigns, tabling, updates in What's New/Reporter, outreach to student groups, academic staff, and administrative staff);
  • Play a key role in the review and implementation of the Policies;
  • Participate in the Implementation Committee of the _Policy against Sexual Violence_;
  • Utilize case management software and assist with data gathering for annual reporting.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • Undergraduate degree (Law degree or graduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., social work, counselling psychology)
  • Three (3) years related experience
  • Experience and/or training in mediation and/or dispute resolution;
  • Experience in conducting investigations in a workplace and learning settings;
  • Experience in writing effective, traumainformed and procedurally fair investigative reports;
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral;
  • Bilingual capable of working with proficiency in both French and English;
- impeccable understanding of, training on, and experience with procedural fairness, confidentiality, trauma-informed investigations, report-writing, and active listening.

  • Indepth knowledge of University systems and policies;
  • Indepth knowledge of University administrative and academic units, actors, resources;
  • Indepth knowledge of principles core to the Policies, such as, human rights, procedural fairness, equity and inclusion;
  • Indepth understanding of a traumainformed approach to investigations.
  • Knowledge of French and English._
