This role is eligible for hybrid or remote work - this means you'll have the flexibility of working from home and in the office, after 3-6 months of successful job performance.

Until then, the successful incumbent will be expected to work on-site (any location in SK), full-time.


GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY


The Claims Construction Specialist is responsible for providing in-house building construction and repair expertise and consultation on complex large loss property claims.

The CCS operates both within and outside the province of Saskatchewan to assist in quantifying damages and repair costs on complex claims.

This position conducts building inspections; prepares and/or reviews repair estimates; and provides technical advice, training and support to property adjusters on building construction and repairs.

This position will also provide technical expertise and support to the Property Damage Estimators.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Building Inspections and Construction Consulting- Conducts on-site building and damage inspections of residential, commercial and agricultural buildings, structures and properties to assess damages due to a loss.- Prepares assessments and reports on proper repair methods conforming to industry standards.- Assists with project management of large losses and complex repair processes.- Reviews building codes and bylaws (National Building Code of Canada, city building bylaws and other codes and bylaws governing building construction) to determine regulatory-compliant construction and repairs.- Provides technical advice on, and interpretation of, repair requirements, building bylaws and regulations to property adjusters on claims files.


Estimating and Cost Control- Determines the scope of loss, including creating repair scopes, tender packages, and related documents and negotiating with contractors on these items.- Creates detailed repair estimates using electronic estimating software for the purpose of quantifying the loss, establishing reserves for the repair value and providing information to assist adjusters in adjusting the claim file.- Reviews addendums on large loss files.- Directs and Coordinates work of contractors.

Monitors and ensures the quality of work of contractors and ensures safety protocol is adhered to.- Directs and coordinates the construction procurement process by acquiring quotations from suppliers and/or contractors.

This includes negotiating scope and price with contractors as required.


Training and Reporting- Provides training and coaching to property adjusters and Property Damage Estimators on building inspections, repair methods, estimate creations (written and electronic) and cost control methods.- Provides construction expertise and support to property adjusters in meetings with customers, brokers and contractors.- Prepares and completes a claim assignment form on each file to determine, track and evaluate the outcome of their file involvement.- Prepares periodic reporting and analysis on inspection and estimating activity for file and record purposes.- Provides advice on, analysis of, and interpretation of, their forms, reports and data to others within SGI on a periodic basis.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS- Skill in scoping/estimating property damages (residential, commercial and agricultural buildings), including the use of estimating systems (e.g., Symbility and Xactimate).- Skill in determining values of repair (replacement cost and actual cash value) and depreciation applicable to property.- Knowledge of construction techniques.- Knowledge of relevant sections of bylaws, building codes and related fire, plumbing and electrical codes, and the rules and regulations in the SK Occupational Health and Safety Act, in the context of claims repair situations.- Level skill in interpreting building construction plans, sketches, blueprints and specifications. Knowledge of insurance theory and principles, practices, methods and techniques related to adjustment and settlement of claims.- Skill in oral technical communications.
