JOB SUMMARY


Niagara Region is looking to hire a team of six (6) students to administer the annual Niagara Employment Inventory from May to August 2023.


The student team will collect data on general business characteristics and employee counts to form a comprehensive inventory that serves as an important resource for informing Regional and local municipal policy directions.

Employment data collected through this project helps provide a detailed understanding of the current employment landscape within Niagara.

The inventory also plays a role in supporting decisions related to population and employment growth, infrastructure investment and the monitoring of economic conditions and trends.


The student team will undertake the collection of employment data through conducting brief in-person, door-to-door interviews with business owners throughout Niagara.

Students will primarily compile the inventory results on a handheld mobile device, but will also be required to perform other office duties to support the project.


Students will report to Niagara Regional Headquarters (1815 Sir Isaac Brock Way, Thorold) throughout the work week, however daily travel will be required within the Niagara region.

Students must supply their own vehicle and proof of insurance, and be able to work both outdoors and in an office setting.


The role involves:

  • Frequent, direct interaction with the public, representing Niagara Region.
  • Walking, travelling and entering data the majority of the time.
  • Exposure to inclement weather (ex. heat, rain, etc.).
  • The student team travelling together in the same vehicle.

EDUCATION:


  • Completion of a high school diploma or equivalency (ex. GED).

KNOWLEDGE:


  • High degree of computer proficiency in Word, Excel and other Microsoft Office Suite programs.
  • Experience working with database management is an asset.
  • Experience using webbased and hard copy maps for operational and navigational purposes.

SKILLS:


  • Ability to collect and manage information efficiently and accurately.
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team.
  • Selfmotivated, confident and responsible.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
  • Comfortable interacting with members of the public frequently on a daily basis.
  • Comfortable performing routine and repetitive tasks (ex. data entry).
  • Comfortable working in inclement weather.
  • Comfortable working in pairs/teams with other students and staff.
  • Comfortable working in the field, which requires extended time on your feet and walking.
  • Previous related work, coop or volunteer experience is an asset.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in assignment priority.
  • Attentive to detail and resourceful.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:


  • Must provide proof of successful completion of high school.
  • Must provide proof of enrollment in a related postsecondary program.
  • Must provide proof of valid driver's license & adequate automobile insurance (G class license is preferred).
  • Must have access to a reliable personal vehicle to travel to businesses across the region on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to start fulltime work, Monday to Friday, as early as May 1, 2023.
