MacEwan University Sport and Wellness is seeking students to fill the role of League Referee for indoor soccer, floor hockey, and dodgeball leagues.

Recreation offers 8-week leagues in the Fall and Winter terms.

Leagues run from late September to early December in the Fall and from late January to Early April in the Winter.

Leagues will not run on all statutory holidays and academic breaks. Leagues run Sunday afternoons and Monday-Thursday evenings.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate appropriate player management skills through effective communication that assists in creating a fun and inclusive environment.
  • Ensure games are played in a manner which is safe for participants of all skill levels and abilities.
  • Setup and takedown league supplies and equipment.
  • Handle participant conflicts in a calm and professional manner.
  • Call fouls and/or infractions as seen and carry out penalties as needed.
  • Issue red and yellow cards as needed.
  • Manage substitutions checking into the game.
  • Assign pinnie colours to teams.
  • Ensure that league games start and end on time.
  • Assess Spirit Ratings, in discussion and collaboration with League Staff.
  • Adhere to Recreation's policies and procedures as well as sport and league rules.
  • Complete timesheets daily.
  • Attend Recreation training.
  • Advertise and promote Recreation events to their peers.

SKILLS

  • Energetic and enthusiastic ready to have fun.
  • Interest and general knowledge of sport and recreation.
  • Demonstrated customer service abilities.
  • Must be able to work effectively with a team as well as independently.
  • Attention to detail.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of sport (i.e. rules, format, rosters, and equipment set up).
  • Sport participation experience is an asset.
  • Ability to work 410 hours per week during league season(s).
  • Experience in recreation and event management is an asset
  • Ability to lift and push equipment in excess of 50 lbs (22 kg) during setup and takedown tasks.
  • Standard First Aid certification is an asset.
