Job Summary


Positions in this classification are responsible for operating a central tool crib and the receiving, storing, distribution and inventory control of tools, equipment, furniture, supplies and related material.

Organizational Status

Reports to Head Tool Crib/Store Operator.

Work Performed


Provides expertise and advice to users on the usage, maintenance, and selection of tools, equipment, furniture, supplies and other related materials.

Maintains a high level of customer service.


Sources out new tools, equipment, furniture and other supplies requested by shops; facilitates procurement, makes recommendations and estimates, obtains quotations.

Receives, stores, and distributes tools, equipment, furniture and other supplies. Performs regular inventory checks and random spot checks to ensure all items are maintained and accounted for.

Ensures that tools, equipment and supplies meet the technical quality and required compliance for design and project needs.

Documents and maintains manual and electronic records of all items as required by established or new procedures.


Performs routine maintenance of tools, equipment and other supplies for the entire department and for all trades; inspects items for damage and operating condition and stores in appropriate location; repairs or makes arrangement for the repair or replacement of damaged items.

Arranges for the renting of tools, equipment and other supplies not available in the department to designated areas.


Provides training to borrowers in the proper handling and operation of all tools, equipment, furniture, and other supplies under the control of the tool crib and store.

Develops a vendor delivery schedule for drivers to transport tools, equipment, furniture and other supplies.

Provides regular courier service to the trades shops for the issuing and return of items and maintains appropriate transaction records.

Operates forklift, other equipment and other fleet as required.

Follows and adheres to established security and safety measures.

Ensures that the workplace is safe and that safe work practices are being followed.


Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement


Determines sequence of duties performed; exercises judgement on requirements of tool, equipment, furniture and other supplies, and assesses the condition of used items; decides the appropriateness of repair or replacement; inappropriate decisions may result in minor service delays and poor customer service.

Under general supervision; works from oral and written instructions and according to established procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation and a minimum five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of tools and equipment of various trades is required. A valid class 5 BC Drivers' License.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficient use of MS Office - particularly in MS Excel. Experience with an inventory management system preferred.
