Position Summary:


Centre for Innovation in AI Technology (CIAIT) Principal Investigator will oversee multiple applied research projects and ensure academic quality and technical direction.

This includes collaborating with industry partners for project planning, budgeting, and execution.

In addition, the incumbent will also lead the development of funding proposals, actively contributes to CIAIT's strategic planning, and plays a key role in establishing best practices, standard operating procedures, and fostering relationships with researchers from other institutions.

This is for a 1 year contract position with the possibility of extension.


Responsibilities:


Applied research projects

  • Leads the development of applied research project work plans, milestones, timelines, resource requirements and budgets in collaboration with Research Manager, and external partners.
  • Ensures that the development of projects is responsive to industry and/or community partner needs, promotes student involvement.
  • Develops and writes funding proposal(s) to support the research project, in particular in relation to the technical aspects and direction of the research.
  • Hires research assistants and trains them to be successful in the completion of project.
  • Responds to industry/or community partner requests and questions in a timely manner.
  • Assigns, guides, and mentors coInvestigators and Ras on specific duties and work on the research project.
  • Works with research team to ensure that project plans are completed on time and budget.
  • Informs the Research Manager of all expenses and matters related to the research contract while ensuring funds are spent on eligible items and that research funds are managed.
  • Liaises with Seneca faculty and administration to ensure that required resources are available.
  • Ensures that the research ethics review processes are applied to projects as appropriate.
  • Stays abreast with scientific literature and trends in the Artificial Intelligence area to improve CIAIT offerings and provide strategic advice.

External Relations and advocacy

  • Represents/promotes CIAIT at events (e.g., trade shows, seminars, conferences) to highlight applied research.
  • Acts on behalf of the Research Manager or Director, Research Partnerships in discussions of applied research, academic, industrial innovation and product commercialization.
  • Supports the identification and engagement of external partners, ecosystem network partners, and funding opportunities to support the continued evolution of CIAIT.
  • Develops scientific collaborations with researchers at other colleges, universities and other research institutes.

Operations

  • Manages administrative tasks: equipment procurement and centerrelated space issues.
  • Contributes to internal and external committees and task forces as needed.
  • Actively assists in planning applied research events associated with the center.

Qualifications:


Education

  • Minimum completed Ph.
D. in Computer Science, Data Science, Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning or a related field.


Experience

  • Minimum one (1) year experience conducting research preferably within industry or industry partnered, with strong applied context in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning etc.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing research projects, including staff supervision and budget oversight.
  • Proficient in research design, methods, and the development of research grants.

Skills

  • Experience managing cloud services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud is an asset.
  • Strong communications skills with the ability to convey complex technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams, external partners, and stakeholders, fostering an environment conducive to successful research outcomes.
  • Efficient management of time, resources, and project deliverables, ensuring projects are completed within specified timelines and budgets.

A combination of relevant experience and education may be considered as equivalent to the above requirements in the event that there are no internal applicants that meet the qualifications as posted.

Equivalency will be assessed by the talent acquisition team.
