Job Summary


Reporting to the Manager, Environmental, Health & Safety, the
Health & Safety Specialist will be responsible for supporting and monitoring Health & Safety throughout Atura Power's business & operations.

This position is primarily located in our corporate head office in Oakville and will require regular travel to our fleet of plants across southern Ontario.


Responsibilities

  • Provide Health and Safety support across Atura Power assets including emergency management programs.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of a Health, Safety & Environment managed system.
  • Keep abreast of internal and external changes that affect Atura Power's health & safety strategy. Incorporate the required changes into affected programs.
  • Support compliance to federal and provincial regulations, local bylaws and corporate policies.
  • Actively engage personnel in a supporting role to develop effective safety solutions for identified hazards and challenges.
  • Perform a leading role in safety process implementation including rolling out and providing training for new or modified procedures/policies.
  • Respond to unplanned safety events.
  • Maintain open communications with applicable safety partners across Atura.
  • Develop and maintain Site Specific Safety Plans, Emergency Response Plans etc.
  • Support process safety reviews.
  • Actively participate in Health Safety & Environment related meetings (JHSC, Pre-Job, safety standdown, lessons learned, incident response meetings, etc.)
  • Schedule, lead or assist with planned Health, Safety & Environment inspections and audits.
  • Utilize and coach others in the use of the Environment, Health, Safety Management Incident reporting system.
  • Analyze Health Safety & Environment KPI's data to provide consolidated reports and develop plans to deal with lagging indicators.
  • Provide root cause analysis expertise and lead incident investigations.
  • Assist with identifying and tracking corrective actions.
  • Address inspection, audit, and incident investigation findings.
  • Evaluation of and active participation in job safety analyses process.
  • Participate on scope of work and bid process with contractors / projects
  • Management of the online contractor and employee orientation program
  • Support and develop the health and safety requirements for business development initiatives and projects


The Health & Safety Specialist may participate in planned outages to provide safety oversight though-out the pre-outage planning stages, during the outage, and post-outage review.


Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Attending all outage preplanning meetings
  • Conducting and documenting the Contractor kickoff meeting and daily prejob meetings
  • Reviewing JSAs, Contractor safety plans etc. and advising
  • Reviewing Contractor Site Specific Safety Plans (one time event)
  • Performing Contractor safety orientations
  • Monitoring Contractor safety
  • Notifying Contractors of any observed safety incidents and reporting requirements
  • Attending a representative number of Contractor safety meetings
  • Performing a Contractor safety audit as required
  • In conjunction with Operations perform a Work Protection Permit audit
  • Providing safety related lessons learned at the end of the outage
  • Participate in developing an outage site specific safety plan in advance of each scheduled/planned outage

Qualifications & Education

  • Technical expertise in safety with strong interpersonal skills to effectively work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Knowledge of applicable provincial and federal legislation.
  • Postsecondary education in the disciplines of Health and Safety.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in power generation or industrial Health and Safety.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation, or equivalent safety certification would be an asset.
