Job Summary


The Material Planner is responsible for overseeing the 28-Day and longer workscopes of material requirements for 2,400 locomotives owned by CN.

The incumbent plans, organizes, and directs the material needed for scheduled and unscheduled maintenance shopping events throughout the year as part of the annual Capitalized and Operational plan in conjunction with the Material Planning Managers.


Main Responsibilities:


Standardize Bill of Materials (BOMs)

  • Review mechanical work scopes with CN Mechanical Reliability
  • Understand Locomotive material requirements and quantities required
  • Communicate all revisions to BOMs to Material Planning group

Forecast Material Requirements

  • Forecast material requirements per planned maintenance
  • Plan and organize required scheduled and unscheduled maintenance material
  • Communicate material requirements to cross functional groups to minimize overall dwell time and cost

Material Requirement Planning [MRP] in SAP

  • Understand required minimum and maximum inventory and safety stock levels to Procurement & Supply Management (P&SM)
  • Understand stockout and Locomotive Held for Materials (LHFM) scenarios inline with scheduled and unscheduled programs
  • Interact with respective P&SM Managers to deal with material bottlenecks and identify key opportunities, as required
  • Ensure procurement strategy is implemented for inventory management and pipeline delivery over time
  • Follow CN's established Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for material cost trending, stockouts, LHFM, etc.

Maintain CN's Annual Capitalized and Operational expenditures

  • Plan and order required material for all annual capitalized and operational workscopes and modifications to be completed internally and externally that CN Mechanical Reliability and Mechanical Planning determines to be needed
  • Centralize Capital and Operating Work Orders in Material Planning to provide financial reporting updates
  • Coordinate all material with P&SM, vendors, and internal warehousing for distribution
  • Maintain the following types of typical capital and operating events; Engine overhauls, Truck overhauls, Main generator and alternator overhauls, as well as other locomotive related modifications pertaining to Reliability, Safety, and Regulatory.

Working Conditions:

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The incumbent must be available to work weekends when necessary.

Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress.

The role requires mínimal travel in Canada and the US.


Requirements:


Experience

Inventory Management

  • Between 1 to 2 years of experience in inventory management
  • Experience in Supply Chain
  • Experience in Forecasting and reporting
  • Railway background at CN
  • Electronics background**Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset

Education/Certification/Designation:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Supply Chain Management, Engineering, or equivalent
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Competencies:

Technical Skills/Knowledge:


  • Forecasting, planning, organizational, and reporting skills
  • Knowledge of CN Locomotive Mechanical
  • Knowledge of SAP and SRS
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills such as PowerPoint and Excel
  • Knowledge of CN Transportation
  • Knowledge of analytical tools (e.g. Business Objects, SAP BW)
  • Knowledge of CN P&SM
  • Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

The Material Planner position impacts CN's ability to reduce the overall inventory costs, locomotive dwell and units held for materials during scheduled and unscheduled maintenance inspections.
