Supervisor, Animal Nutrition & Supplies in our Animal Care, Health & Welfare branch.


The Supervisor will responsibly manage resources (feed, supplies, equipment), have strong written and verbal communication, and maintain records and compliance with policies, protocols and regulations that mirror the mission and vision of the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo.

What you will do:


  • Leadership_
  • Supervise a diverse team of paid and unpaid staff with unique skill sets and range of duties, support in skillbuilding and development.
  • Manage resources to support operational programs, processes and functions related to animal nutrition and supplies including but not limited to: inventory, material acquisition and distribution, budget monitoring, animal nutrition services, equipment repair/replace/warranty services, and all related logistics.
  • Refine and improve upon opportunities to utilize the volunteer workforce to enhance the delivery of animal care goals and objectives, including leading recruitment, training, support and feedback.
  • In collaboration with the Interim Manager, Animal Care
  • Projects, oversee the organizational pest management program.
  • Work closely with Animal Care Managers and Animal Care Supervisors, in addition to the Animal Nutrition & Supplies business unit.
  • Manage, mentor and coach paid and unpaid staff in the animal nutrition & supplies business unit.
  • Performance management of direct reports.
  • Develop strategies to ensure effective implementation of policies, procedures and protocols within the branch and across the organization.
  • Special Projects & Planning_
  • Participate in and support accreditation processes; participate in the creation and execution of action plans to address deficiencies and corrective actions on an ongoing basis to maintain the standard of "accreditation readiness" in the commissary.
  • Revitalize inventory systems, processes and workflow.
  • Establish ordering routines and centralized ordering and receiving activities.
  • Ensure proper storage, handling and food stock rotation to prevent unnecessary waste and assure quality and safety of animal diets. Coordinate offsite delivery logistics.
  • Operations_
  • Liaise with other departments to organize maintenance of supplies, equipment and buildings/facilities in animal care areas.
  • Monitor and oversee assigned equipment inventories and service (maintenance, replacement, ticketing).
  • Communicate effectively and share knowledge within the business unit and other areas of the zoo regarding zoowide information.
  • Continuous Improvement_
  • Look for opportunities to improve and streamline procedures, processes and documentation and recommends policies and procedures to maintain productivity within organizational guidelines.
  • Lead and continuously improve operational functions of business unit.
  • Embrace an environment of continuous learning through proactively seeking knowledge and skills to effectively manage change and process improvement.
  • Budget_
  • Support team with budget information and recommendations to improve financial and environmental sustainability.
  • Oversee animal food budgets, including procurement of food and supplies while being conscious of cost, environmental impact, and vendor relationships.
  • Preapprove and code invoices using established Financial systems.
  • Identify and pursue donation opportunities related to animal food and enrichment.
  • Identify potential areas for partnership/donation to offset operational costs.

What you will bring:


  • A bachelor's degree in animal nutrition or a related discipline
  • Minimum 3 years experience in Business Services, Warehousing/Distribution, Operations, Kitchen Management
  • Proven experience in animal care operations roles and functions.
  • Strong business knowledge and administrative/professional expertise is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated success in influencing decision making.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of zoo terminology, awareness of the importance of animal welfare, conservation, safety.
  • Demonstrated initiative, ability to adapt to and be a champion of change; expertise in leading and implementing business change.
  • Effective interaction with employees at all levels of the organization (including society, cityunion, contractors and volunteers).
  • Selfdriven, proven ability to take initiative and drive continuous improvement.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to frequently changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License
