Telemetry is used to continuously monitor the cardiac rhythm and electrocardiogram (ECG) morphology of patients considered at particularly high risk of malignant arrhythmia or cardiac ischemia.
Cardiac Monitoring Technician (CMT) is a qualified staff member who has the knowledge, skills and judgment to analyze and interpret cardiac rhythms.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The ECG Technician performs ongoing surveillance of patients' cardiac monitors and provides nursing staff and physicians with timely notification of changes in cardiac rhythm and/or hemodynamics that could affect patient condition on the Cardiovascular Surgery or Cardiology inpatient units
Their responsibilities include:
- Monitoring and analyzing the cardiac telemetry system for all patients that are undergoing continuous cardiac monitoring.
- Responding to concerning rhythm findings and/or reporting to the primary nurse to assess the patient themselves (for medium/high alert alarms), and if they are available and adequate coverage is provided, to respond to priority alarms as appropriate.
- Performing initial system assessment and check on the status of the patient, as required.
- Interpreting patient's cardiac rhythm and documents accordingly in the patients chart and relay significant findings to the most responsible nurse in a timely fashion as per unit standards, policies and procedures.
- Documenting all findings and interpretations (e.g. rhythm, PRi, QRS, QT interval, etc.) every 4 hours and as needed (e.g. arrhythmia, changes in patient condition) including report to most responsible nurse
- Initiating and/or discontinuing telemetry on patients under a physician/ Nurse Practitioner (NP) order
and upon direction from the most responsible nurse. Initial skin prep (e.g. shaving for electrode placement) and troubleshooting low priority alarms will be a shared responsibility between nurses/CMTs and require continual communication between the primary nurse and the CMT (e.g. low battery alarms, artifact, and lead/electrode disconnection). - Registering/inputting and discontinuing patient identifier information in the system
- Performing ECGs on Cardiovascular Surgery and Cardiology patients, under a physician or NP order as directed by the most responsible nurse.
- Providing report to oncoming shift and when leaving for break (Charge nurse and/or CMT)
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Registration with CTAO and/or CSCT required.
- Successful completion of a recognized Cardiology Technician Program
- Successful completion of Coronary Care 1 (CC1) or approved equivalent
- Successful completion of telemetry assessment test to be completed on hire.
- Experience in performing 12 lead ECG. Telemetry monitoring.
- Must be able to work independently and prioritize work in a fast pace environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
- Must have an excellent attendance record.
This position is for 2 pm to 10 pm shifts each week on Saturday and Sunday
