Personal Support Worker - contract full time - evening shift 10:30pm - 6:30pm


General Accountability:
The Personal Support Worker reports directly to the Palliative Services Manager and the Registered Nurse.


Position Summary:


As a member of a trans-disciplinary team the PSW will assist residents of the Dorothy Ley Hospice Residential Program with all aspects of their daily living as required and will assist with the provision of end-of-life care to all residents and their families.

The PSW will ensure that the residents have a safe, supportive and caring environment to live in.


As a member of a trans-disciplinary team the PSW will work collaboratively with the palliative individuals, their families and all other team members towards the achievement of identified care goals and the enhancement of quality of life as defined by them.


The PSW will provide the care in accordance with the organization's Model of Care and according to established policies and procedures.


PSWs are expected to be a positive role model for staff, volunteers, guests, family members, health care professionals, and the community.


Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Resident & Family Care
Provides resident care, assistance and support in activities of daily living as needed:

  • Personal grooming and hygiene
  • Bathing and washing
  • Positioning and transferring
  • Meal ordering and food preparation
  • Feeding
  • Rising and retiring
  • Toileting, emptying and changing leg bag and emptying catheter bags
  • Monitoring bowel routines
  • Exercises as defined in the individual's care plan
  • Light housekeeping which includes activities such as loading and unloading dishwasher, dusting, tidying, stocking supplies in order to keep the environment safe and clean for all
- terminal cleaning of the rooms when needed

  • Knowledge and use of adaptive aids and equipment as required by residents
  • Contribute to and review assessment, goal planning and progress reviews for all residents
  • Assist with implementation of care plans and any emergency situation ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all concerned
  • Respect and encourage resident selfdetermination and independent living.
  • Provide physical, emotional, spiritual and practical comfort measures

Administration and Reporting

  • Participate in team meetings, training activities and orientation of new staff and volunteers.
  • Review program manuals and contribute to the development of new resources as required.
  • Keep informed of resident service needs by reviewing care plans, monitoring notes, medication charts and team meeting minutes.
  • Maintain communication with Primary Nurse and support care team and report any concerns regarding service delivery, resident care and safety issues.
  • Observes for and reports any changes in the residents condition to the appropriate team members
  • Assist residents in any emergency situation.
  • Record all information pertaining to shift activity as per hospice procedures.
  • Work in collaboration with other health care professionals.
  • Know and comply with all emergency fire safety regulations, health and safety guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with family, residents, professionals and the community.
  • Treat residents, family members, guests and health care team members with respect and dignity at all times.
  • May perform other tasks as delegated in accordance with the College of Nurses delegation standard.
  • Perform other tasks that may be assigned by the Manager of Client Services and/or the Executive Director.

Essential Qualifications:


  • Graduation from an accredited Personal Support Worker Program or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year recent personal care experience
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English
  • A commitment to the philosophy of hospice palliative care
  • The ability to work in a professional manner independently, as well as with direction
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work
  • Ability to work with and support volunteers
  • Knowledgeable and committed to cultural competence and cultural inclusion
  • Demonstrated professional attitude in relating to residents and their families, staff, volunteers and community
  • Ability and commitment to work within a transdisciplinary team and highly developed team building skills
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of this position i.e. able to stand, bent, squat, kneel and reach freely; able to freely lift 23 kilograms; able to assist with standing walking, sitting and positioning in bed.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Additional Qualifications:


  • Work experience in Hospice Palliative Care
  • Palliative Care Certificate an asset
  • Work experience in community health care
  • Second language an asset.
