The Reuse Centre accepts various items from Edmonton residents free of charge and makes them available to organizations and individuals for reuse.


The Reuse Centre has three main goals:

to promote the idea and benefits of reusing, accepting and providing items to redistribute back into the community, and to divert waste from landfills.

The Centre contributes to the Waste Services Branch's 25 year strategy by initiating a circular economy and helps to achieve the goal of 90% waste diversion from landfill.


Reuse Centre Attendants are involved in the physical management and organization of accepted items, and assist with a public area where items are offered and educational components of the branch waste system are encouraged.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Transfer donated items from the drop-off area to the 6000 sq ft store area
  • Review all donated materials for safety and cleanliness
  • Organize and display reuse, merchandising, and educational items in the retail store in an visually appealing manner that creates an inviting retail environment
  • Ensure that the store area is clean and free of hazards, including cleaning shelves and containers various times throughout the day
  • Suggest changes to floor layout and bin placement to improve efficiency and/or to reflect any program changes
  • Perform accurate data entry for the purpose of maintaining various records
  • Accept items from residents at the dropoff area
  • Screen out unacceptable materials, weigh, move, and sort large volumes of material on a continuous basis
  • Educate patrons on reuse alternatives and community initiatives
  • Assist with public programming at the facility or offsite if required
  • Answer inquiries and questions about the Reuse Centre and Waste Services in general
  • Ensure the drop off area and related storage areas are clean, safe and properly maintained for customers and staff
  • Respond to customer complaints and concerns
  • Assist customers with items they would like to take, weighing their items
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Completion of Grade 12 or higher
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience working with the public in an inperson customer service capacity, including retail experience
  • 2 years or more of customer service or retail experience is an asset
  • Warehouse and/or labour experience is an asset
  • Experience educating the public or public presenting is an asset
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position which includes lifting and moving a high volume of boxes for 2 to 3 hours at a time
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of materials and the appropriate methods of handling, storage and disposal of these materials, or the ability to successfully pass training courses in these areas
  • Knowledge of the effective use of safety equipment (such as spill kits, gloves etc), or the ability to successfully pass training courses in these areas (such as WHMIS)
  • Some knowledge of City of Edmonton's Waste Management programs and services is an asset
  • Ability to assess incoming materials for acceptability, and identify potential hazards
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, as well as take initiative and direct own work during independent, less busy times
  • Strong organizational and timemanagement skills, including the ability to complete all work tasks in the presence of conflicting needs of clients and staff
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing when dealing with diverse clientele

_ Up to 1 permanent full time position and 2 temporary part-time positions_

Hours of Work:

Permanent Full Time - 40 hours per week

Temporary Part Time - Up to 39 hours per week; shifts varying from 3 to 8 hours per day, Tuesday through Saturday.

Ability to work Mondays, holidays and evenings, as required.
The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time.

Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
