Summer Kitchen and Facilities Assistant
Location:
Nekinan Property, Smoky Lake, AB
Position Status:
Full Time (40 hrs per week), Summer Student (May-August)

The Opportunity
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with meal and food preparation.
- Maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment, including taking out garbage, sweeping, washing and drying dishes and utensils, and unpacking and storing food and kitchen supplies.
- Ensure all food safety regulations are followed.
- Harvest garden vegetables.
- Light housekeeping of facilities.
- Assist with ground maintenance, small building maintenance and repairs, and setup, takedown, and facilitation of events.
- General gardening, including weeding, watering, hauling dirt, and harvesting.
- Assist with office and accommodations tasks, including moving shipments, organizing materials and supplies, and assisting with the operations of Nekinan.
- Appropriately use and wear required equipment, devices, and clothing in compliance with OHS.
- Report any issues or defective equipment and adhere to WHMIS at all times.
- Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, citizens, visitors, and other external stakeholders.
- Other duties as required or assigned.
Skills & Competencies
We are looking for a motivated, confident, and hard-working individual who has a strong interest in supporting the operations of the Nekinan facility and performing indoor and outdoor maintenance.
Other skills/competencies include:
- Knowledge and understanding of food safety standards and safe work practices.
- Ability to use common kitchen appliances and tools effectively and safely.
- Ability to operate power and hand tools in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships.
- Strong planning and organizational skills, with an ability to organize and prioritize daily tasks and longterm objectives.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and willingness to learn new skills.
- Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to multitask and switch between multiple priorities.
- Political and cultural sensitivity.
- Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An indepth understanding of the MNA and Métis culture is an asset.
Qualifications
- Some knowledge of food preparation. Related education, training, or experience in a food service environment is preferred.
- Knowledge of and experience with power tools and lawn maintenance is an asset.
- 12 years of experience in maintenance or landscaping is an asset.
- Ability to lift 4050 pounds.
- WHMIS and First Aid training.
Other Requirements
- Availability to work assigned shifts from Monday to Friday.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends, with notice.
- Ability to travel throughout Alberta is a requirement.
- Reliable transportation and valid Class 5 driver's license.
