Under the guidance of the Executive Director, this role leads ECU's public relations, media relations, internal communications and community engagement efforts, and supports the Executive Director with issues management and crisis communications.

The Manager supervises, mentors and motivates members of ECU's communications team, oversees external service providers, and provides leadership within the Communications + Marketing department.

They work collaboratively to develop communications campaigns and cross-functional initiatives that support ECU's strategic plan and organizational priorities.

Some Typical Duties:


  • Creates, implements and evaluates communications plans to support the university's strategic plan and organizational priorities, and collaborates with the marketing lead on delivering integrated communications and marketing campaigns and strategies.
  • Directs and supervises members of the communications team. Responsible for recruitment, training, development and evaluation of these roles; cultivates a culture of inclusivity, trust, support and care.
  • Heads the university's public relations efforts in consultation with the Executive Director, by leading creative campaigns to enhance ECU's reputation, connect with new audiences and expand its supporter base. Oversees, writes and edits a breadth of communications materials including news stories, media releases, statements, speeches, newsletters, and other types of audiencetailored content.
  • Collaboratively with the Executive Director, leads editorial content strategy and manages/assigns the production of editorial content to staff and freelancers with a focus on brand journalism and narrative storytelling; streamlines the department's approach to collaborative content planning and establishes best practices around managing a content calendar.
  • Develops and oversees the creation and implementation of media relations plans to enhance the university's reputation locally, nationally and internationally, to elevate the status and recognition of the school's leadership, faculty, students, alumni and supporters.
  • Works proactively to find and create media opportunities to profile the expertise of ECU spokesperson including senior leadership, faculty, and researchers, to build the university's reputation and brand recognition; coaches and prepares spokespeople for media interviews.
  • Supports media relations activities by developing or overseeing the creation of materials including media releases, media advisories, backgrounders, Q&As, key messages and pitches; supervises media monitoring and reporting; creates departmental processes and procedures to build, organize and streamline the media relations portfolio.
  • Cultivates relationships with internal and external partners including media; responds to media inquiries and acts as a media spokesperson when required.
  • Creates internal communications plans to foster transparency, build community, and promote the effective distribution of information to students, staff and faculty; guides and provides oversight on the creation of a robust annual internal communications strategy and plan.
