Position Summary:


Reporting to the Supervisor, Roads and Traffic Operations, the Roads Operator is responsible for the maintenance and repair of City road infrastructure and operation of equipment.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Manhole and catchbasin repairs; curb and sidewalk repairs; hot mix/cold mix patching; winter maintenance; road patrol; traffic control; street light inspection, support vehicle maintenance; and other similar road/traffic infrastructure maintenance work functions.
  • Associated responsibilities include providing over sight to small work crews, documenting work activity and detailed work records (Maximo), and investigating and assisting with followups to enquiries from the public
  • All duties must be performed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and City policies, procedures and practices.
  • Aware of all relevant legislation
  • Monitor contractor performance, ensure health and safety compliance and site activity during after hours
  • Be aware of potential flooding areas and provide emergency response to mitigate risk
  • Summer/winter standby
  • Pickup/deliver shopping carts, grocery shopping for events
  • Respond to spills using spill kits
  • Prepare work orders, time sheets and other daily paperwork (Maximo)
  • Read stakeouts
  • Proficient in trailering equipment safely
  • Setup safe work zones
  • Available for standby and after hours call ins
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:


  • High School Diploma
  • Standard First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Minimum 2 years' experience
  • Successful completion of the Anderson/Mahoney Construction and Maintenance Courses is an asset

Required Skills/Knowledge:


  • Demonstrated experience in construction and maintenance of roadways
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of winter maintenance equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and keep records
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Physically able to perform the physical demands of this position under adverse weather and site conditions
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ontario Class "DZ" Driver's License in good standing and must provide a satisfactory current Drivers Abstract from the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO)
  • Requires satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Demonstrates good judgment and makes sound decisions
