    Description

    Introduction

    The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is responsible for establishing and managing public infrastructure, including, provincial highways and roads, highway bridges and structures, water and flood control works, and northern airports and marine services.
    Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be able to work in a controlled laboratory environment with exposure to heat, dust and hazardous materials.
  • Must be able to work in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions when required.
  • Must be physically able to lift a minimum of 25 kg test samples repeatedly as required through the course of the day.
  • Must be able to travel throughout Manitoba by land, sea, or air as required.
  • Must be able to work extended hours during construction season, including daily, weekends and / or statutory holidays
    • Qualifications: Essential:
  • Graduate of Civil Engineering Technology (CET) Diploma program from a recognized Institute of Technology or completion of departments level 3 training program. An equivalent combination of relevant education and related experience may be considered.
  • Extensive technical experience in laboratory testing of road construction materials together with proper use of various types of material testing equipment, maintenance and calibration.
  • Knowledge about ASTM, AASHTO, CSA standard test procedures applicable to road construction material testing, MTI specifications and different types of service delivery methods.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills with the ability to administer variety of material research programs, resolve complex issues related to various road construction material and provide para-professional advice to different stakeholders
  • Excellent writing skills as related to data preparation, laboratory test reports and technical documentation.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines.
  • Strong decision making and problem solving skills that demonstrate a high degree of political acumen, initiative, independence and judgement.
  • Knowledge of the Department`s Occupational Safety, Health and Risk Management Program.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
    • Desired:
  • Knowledge of financial management skills such as periodical cost recovery for testing services, ability to follow MTI's procurement guidelines for purchase of lab equipment and services.
    • Duties: The Senior Material Technician reports to the Senior Materials Technologists and is responsible to supervise and provide a responsible paraprofessional resource to staff operating within the Materials Engineering Central Lab's Bituminous Mix and Binder sections. The incumbent will perform specialized technical work to determine the physical properties of materials used in MTI construction, research and maintenance projects and is a senior technical resource to Department staff on construction materials
