Role Overview
Are you passionate about ocean and climate education and how we can protect and restore our ocean?

We have a unique opportunity to join Ocean Wise's Youth team.

Reporting to the Manager of Mobile Programs, the Assistant Manager provides critical logístical, planning and evaluation support for Ocean Wise's Mobile Programs that features our Sea Dome and Discovery Kits.

Mobile Programs, a flagship Youth program at Ocean Wise, delivers engaging, inclusive and impact-driven ocean conservation programming for schools, clubs, camps, as well as informal education activations at events and festivals across Canada.

The Assistant Manager will provide key coordination support between Ocean Wise's External Relations team and the Mobile team to maximize the visibility of the program across Canada.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Provides assistance

and support to the Manager of Mobile Programs and the department by:

  • Lead the planning, logistics and scheduling for the Sea Dome National Tour, a 16-week tour that involves dozens of events across Manitoba and Ontario;
  • Assist the Manager in the development, implementation and evaluation of the Mobile Program with particular attention to impact measurement around changes in awareness and behavior;
  • Assist with the training of staff with a focus on ensuring all onboarding and Risk Management documents are completed;
  • Develop and manage the multimonth team schedule for the team during the National Tour;
  • Source, order and receive key materials and supplies for program development;
  • Work with Comms and Marketing to schedule media engagements as possible throughout the National Tour to elevate Ocean Wise's brand;
  • Act as a member of the education team and actively participate in team activities, projects, and programs when possible. This may include but is not limited to helping organize special events, and interacting with the public at events and festivals;
  • Assist with employee timecards and payroll;
  • Coordinate and deliver programs from time to time as assigned by the Manager;
  • Assist in overseeing department and area budgets and providing regular status updates to the Manager, noting any variances.

Provides management, coaching and mentoring to Direct Reports and extended team members and contributes to and fosters the development of the team by:

  • Creating an environment conducive to individual development, productivity, and achievement while ensuring open lines of communication;
  • Ensuring that staff are well organized, sufficiently trained/crosstrained to perform their responsibilities, developed to their potential and deployed in a manner that permits a costeffective operation;
  • Planning and facilitating individual touch base (ITBs), group touch bases (GTBs), and skill building sessions where appropriate;
  • Providing direction, guidance and support to team members and motivating staff to achieve a high level of performance and productivity;
  • Establishing performance objectives/goals, reviewing progress throughout the year, and completing formal performance reviews for direct reports as required;
  • Recognizing and rewarding success, and managing poor performance;
  • Developing and obtaining agreement on development plans for all direct reports, recommending training courses and seminars where appropriate;
  • Assisting with recruiting, hiring and promoting team members in accordance with standard Ocean Wise policies;
  • Monitoring and controlling expenditures to ensure that Ocean Wise education standards are met while continuing to maintain monthly budget. Tracking budget and maintaining financial records throughout the year;
  • Working with volunteer services to coordinate and nurture volunteers, interns and practicum students.

Other duties:


  • Overseeing the care, maintenance, acquisition and disposal of artifacts, supplies and equipment used in programs;
  • Assist with planning and booking maintenance of vehicles and equipment in timely manner by e.g. logging generator run time;
  • Maintain organizational safety standards;
  • Abides by all organizational policies and procedures;
  • Continually improving our impact on the environment and greening of operations through support of the Environmental Management Systems (EMS) protocols;
  • Performing other duties of similar nature of level as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:


  • Degree in, Natural Sciences, Education, Business, Administration or related field of studies, or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience;
  • Minimum 3 years' work experience in education, project management or related field;
  • Strong background in customer service;
  • Minimum 3 years' experience staff and/or volunteer supervision or equivalent;
  • Experience working with children;
  • First aid certificate an asset (may receive after employment).
